Last week, with a Golden Discs voucher worth a festive €25 on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite Xmas choon and why.
You answered in your tens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis by Tom Waits
Brother Barnabas writes:
Few others can find the beauty in the sordid like he can – and isn’t that what christmas is all about?
Runner up:
River by Joni Mitchell
Milly Vanilly Strikes Again writes:
There’s something melancholic and nostalgic and lovely about this song which sums up Christmas to me in a way few other Christmas songs do. It also happens to be my Xmas party piece after a few drinks, but we’ll say no more on that.
Winner:
When The Thames Froze by Smith & Burrows.
Spud writes:
I love all the old classics I grew up with and the sense of nostalgia they give me, but no other ‘new’ song has that effect on me as this one. Genuinely get the shivers and Christmas feels listening to it.
Thanks all.
Last week: Win ‘Saint’ Nick’s Voucher
always the bridesmaid
Nick doesn’t even ask me to the afters of the wedding.
you need to get frillz to plus-one you
(you’d have to put out, of course)
shur I don’t get a look either
Another very tough choice given how many great songs were offered. Very worthy top 3, and well done Spud!
Millie, I always loved river, and would enjoy hearing your rendition.Just not sure, does the audience need the few drinks first? :)
Thanks Bemused! It’s an old Christmas favourite, though I don’t do it justice when I sing – possibly because of the wine? ;)
Wine always makes things better :)
But in fairness, having heard many really talented songstresses sing it and do it serious justice, Joni Mitchell is simply sublime in her version!
Have a tipple on me :)
Congrats Spud. Great choice and we’ll deserved.
All three worthy of winning… I love that Smith and Burrows song
