The COVID-19 thing is becoming a little concerning, isn’t it?

We can take great comfort in the knowledge that our well-resourced world class health services remain in the very capable hands of Simon Harris.

    Thoughts and prayers.

it will target the young, old and those with a compromised immune system, most people won’t know they have it, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, it will be ok, it’s already here is my bet

      1. Redbeard

        That’s reassuring.

Unless of course you or any of your loved ones are old, young, or immunocompromised.

my Dad is recovering from lung cancer, I’m not saying it’s not a worry, he is definitely at risk, he’s at risk though from any flu,
it’s just that panic is not going to help, people could actually start washing their hands,
the amount of people who don’t is shocking, those gels only kill bacteria and many seem to think they are a sufficient substitute.

You’re right about the hand-washing abandonment. Sheer laziness most of the time. Without sounding panicky, if you do shake hands a lot, propose a raising of the hand instead. Rinse shared cups and spoons in some boiling water.

Have the HSE published anything on basic hygiene? 6000 people a year die from influenza globally so they must have some guidance.

Hope your Dad fully recovers, J.

thanks, I have actually started doing a little bow with the hands together if I get it in before their hand goes out, feck it

Also, when washing, make sure you take off all jewellery. They are massive germ carriers and washing them in warm soapy water isn’t enough.

Had to learn proper hand-washing hygiene when the wee one was in NICU in the Rotunda. They are incredibly strict with their hygiene, for obvious reasons, and once you see how easy it is to transfer infections and germs to the most vulnerable, it’s hard to understand why it isn’t done as standard by all. After two odd months, it simply became a habit and I have taken it into my daily life since then.

snap, after a ridiculous bout of antibiotic resistant ecoli and c-diff , out for two months, no running for 6!! I am all about the hand washing,
plus caring for a sick person your awareness rises big time,
but this should really be common knowledge and practice.
Hope the wee one is a picture of health now Mills

You are projecting your thoughts onto the government… and then getting upset that they “think in that way”?

Classic david move in fairness. Invent a scenario and then talk about how dreadful it is. See also “A SF president would order the Defence Forces to invade Northern Ireland”

The data coming out of China is that the young are pretty much ignored by this virus. The old, the sick and smokers are the preferred target.

Simple hygiene can tackle the spread of this virus, just as it can tackle the flu and the common cold. Use a tissue, cough into your elbow, wash your damns hands, stop touching your face, if you have cold or flu like symptoms stay home instead of coughing and sniffling your way to a crowded workplace on public transport.

good points, I have the hands washed off me, shake up to 100 hands a day, all tourists

unfortunately yes flu infection in the lungs can trigger worsen attacks and increase risk of pneumonia and other acute respiratory diseases.

5 litres of hand wash will cost you around €7 ex shipping. Pharmacists sell in smaller quantities like 250ml which you pay more for (up to €4 for some brands). If you have a refillable soap dispenser at home then you should be buying the 5L anyway.

The name “mother_tucker” would not really be his style, but I’m starting to sense a certain david-esque quality to some of these posts….

That’s the Aviva stadium crowd to a tee.

      3. V

A HIQA insider told me at the weekend that it’s definitely already here

The most likely being students/ low pay workers, who are afraid to visit a doctor or A&E, or even make themselves known. And the chances are that they are probably living in poor overcrowded accommodation.

Sanitisers, masks – stay inside watching Start Up all day

I’m scheduled for a thing in LA later on this year and I’m already on notice that it may be rescheduled

          1. V

Probably a + V to all of that

But also to add, that given we only have an ‘Acting’ Minister for Health, I do think it’s appropriate for the other two main parties to also have a nominee at all task force meetings now too.

And possibly the Greens as they’ll still be on the fringes of whatever happens next in terms of Government formatting

          2. Cian

Should both parties (+ greens) have nominees attending all (acting) Ministerial functions?
Should they be there to see Shane Ross talk to the IRFU?

Or do you leave the current ministers alone until there is a new government?

          3. V

Don’t be a rhymes with sick Cian

You knew I meant the National Public Emergency Team, and the various other Health Spokespersons from the other main parties

And there was me feeling sorry for you n’all
there is a reason for yere decimation Cian,
Totally out of touch, and using condescending nitpicking to make yourselves sound relevant and some way competent

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

nothing beats the hand washing V
          sanitizer only kills bacteria,
to remove pathogens wash soap and warm water for at LEAST 20 seconds, doesn’t sound like long but most people if they wash hands do about 5 secs

          1. Lush

Exactly, sanitizer doesn’t do squat against viruses.
Heard a piece on the BBC saying you should wash your hands for the time it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday to you’.

Sorry to hear about your Dad J; hope you’re all holding up.

        2. Ringsend Incinerator

Agreed. I’m off to Paris tonight. Gonna stock up on hand sanitiser and pot noodles before I go – they’s all be gone by the time I get back next week. What time does Dealz close?

UCD has been warning about the coronavirus for over a month now. Proactive stuff.

      4. yupyup

Seems to be the consensus alright Janet. It is not going to be contained. It’s nature; a low mortality rate and often mild or no symptoms for those carrying the virus, make it really difficult to contain.

        1. ReproBertie

“People are profiteering on a crisis and the government won’t stop them” is a classic fearmongering trope. I seem to remember about a fortnight ago someone posting about sales of face masks booming in Ireland and how pharmacies were unable to get more stocks.

      1. ReproBertie

“Already hand wash has tripled in France Italy”
You can of course provide a link to a story backing this up, right?

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

so up to a normal amount then ;) fact french use less soap per head than most Britts, about a tenth, I once had a French doctor tell me my daily shower was excessive, then he hit on me …ah memories

On the plus side flights will be much cheaper through lack of demand and as shares plunge across the world there will soon be great opportunities to pick through the wreckage.
