No lobotomies!

This afternoon.

A severely reduced number of TDs is sitting in the Dáil to pass the Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill in response to the coronavirus.

The “omnibus” bill deals with matters related to housing, specifically the prevention of tenant evictions or rent increases over the three-month emergency period; planning, specifically the abolition of the requirement for planning permission in certain cases such as the construction of emergency health facilities; healthcare workers, such as the recruitment of medical professionals; the Defence Forces, specifically legislation to allow for the re-enlistment of former members of the Defence Forces and the €3.7billion temporary income support scheme.

The measures also include several amendments to the Mental Health Act 2001 (top), including the amendment concerning “psycho-surgery” (above).

Good to know.
