I consider myself pretty knowledgable about music but I hadn’t heard of John Prine until recent weeks.
Depends on your age and exposure I suppose. As far back as ’72, K.Kristofferson’s “Jesus was a Capricorn” had the subtitle “…owed (sic) to John Prine”. This may have helped give Prine exposure in his early days….it certainly introduced me to him.
@Formerly – Lucky you, he created a wonderful body of work in his own unique style, i’m not an expert on him at all but much like yourself I will try to catch up with his work, Rest in peace, John.
One of my faves, funny as hell and sweet as a nut

Rachel Peer (former Mrs Prine who is the subject of that song) herself lived in Dublin in the late 80s early 90s
A well known and established bass player
I used to knock around with her
Staying in her Rathgar flat before I moved up permanently myself
Last I saw or heard from Rachel was her telling me she was going back to the States, LA
Where her then *Fiancé had got some opportunities lined up
Haven’t seen or heard a word since 92 93ish
*The name Gary springs to mind, he was an actor in Fair City I think
