More Than A Million

Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection Regina Doherty at a Covid-19 press briefing in Government Buildings last month

This afternoon.

In a press released issued by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, minister Regina Doherty said:

“Between our Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment, those on the Live Register and workers who are benefitting from the wage subsidy scheme, over a million people are receiving some sort of state income support – a situation unparalleled in our nation’s history.

“This is a temporary health emergency and many sectors of the economy will be able to switch back on relatively quickly once the danger has passed.

“However, some sectors will be slower than others to recover and we will also have a challenge with youth employment as many young people who could have expected to have entered a buoyant jobs market will now face a much more complex environment.

“Understanding this, my Department is already planning for the post-pandemic environment and considering the best measures to help every worker to get back into the labour force as quickly as possible.”

Is it her department ? Shouldn’t she be one of the statistics
It’s okay I’m not going near the Airport so she can’t set the dogs on me

Ireland has an adult population of about 3.75 million. The above means we now have “over a million” adults on unemployment support. Plus ~700k adults on the public pension. Plus 350k adults are public servants – gardai, teachers etc.

That means there are now significantly less people paying tax from private sector jobs, than there are people being paid directly by the state. The maths on that aren’t going to work out well…

I don’t know if you on the comments on this one, Janet, but this is why the state can’t afford to pay unlimited scratcher to perennial doleheads – there will be times when the state is strapped for cash to support actual workers.

I thought you said they were the minority ?
Look, I bet over a pint we would have more shared views in common than you think, I just can’t stand your looking down decisive tone about people ( doleheads ) as you charmingly call them. Let’s start with respecting each other. There are far greater things this state wastes money on than people you don’t get to judge without knowing their individual cases . It’s small change compared to so much money wasted by this government. …look now you have dragged me into whataboutery , it’s your round

As if she is of any importance or has anything important to say now. She got her come-uppance a couple of months ago.
