Don’t believe anyone who tells you that mid-twentieth-century Ireland didn’t do manufacturing, modernist typography… or knicker elastic…
‘El-Jay’ was a brand name of Braids Ltd., Ennis, County Clare, manufacturers of boot & shoe laces, elastics, braids, nylon cords, etc.

Anyone for some boiled knickers?
Minnie the Minx would have removed elastic from old ones to make catapults.
I thought most people knew that men wore knickers (knickerbockers) in the 19th C – 20th C. That’s why the elastic is so thin as it was only used to gather them around the knees (or ankles) with the support of socks, sock garters or boots.
I love the fact that they’re made from the best artificial silk – that’s really important when it comes to holding one’s knickers up.
