Smooth by Santana with Rob Thomas. Reminds me of lying by a pool in Corfu on the crappiest, cheapest package holiday with some friends who greatly enjoyed the company of, it seemed, every man on holiday there. I had a BF so staggered home alone to the apartment every night. Despite that, twas mighty fun.

  2. songs,spoofing and spliffs.

Brazilian Girls fans had to wait a decade before Lets Make Love with “Karakoy” a stand out.
It takes you on a walk and skip along its namesake streets in Istanbul, with Sabina Sciubba’s vocals overpowering the soft-washed trumpets when the chorus arrives.
A simple song but misleading, its a story,of walking and missing in one the worlds greatest cities.
Its a sunny little novella of pain written sharply with enough nuance to make you start a few teary daydreams…….

This is a live version from Colorado Public Radio’s OpenAir.

Because it was a formative record for me as an early teen in the very early 80’s and pretty much articulated the rage – albeit stupid now – I had by having to spend the effing summer in our mobile home by the seaside in Roslare Strand. I played that album day after day on my Walkman in what must have been 1982 or so. It’s gone now. The mobile home. We sold the plot and there’s houses on the site now. I’d go back there now in a heartbeat though.

Anna Kendrick Cups (When I’m Gone)

When visiting my daughter after that film came out, she used love to sing that song on car rides as we travelled between locations. A four hour drive from the town she lived in to the one where she was born to visit her grandparents could be filled with several renditions. Maybe as it came on the radio, or maybe as she practised the rhythm section on the dashboard (thank god for large American cars, and sincere apologies to the rental company cleaning crew).

Of course when I tried to accompany in vocal section, my little lovely darling who is blessed with perfect pitch (pun intended) she would correct me. I now know the correct places to put the little ‘uh-ohs’ and how to put the right nasal sound to the words. My daughter was very particular about the details!

It has been a while – she is in college now, and Cups is no longer her favourite song. But I still sing it, even if it is only in my head whenever I travel.

I’ve gone all gooey after reading that…
Lovely Slightly, a treasure of a memory beautifully told.

      Thanks for sharing :)

I watched an episode of one of those singing talent shows – X-Factor or Someone’s got talent, I forget which. One of the judges was a former Atomic Kitten member.
A contestant came out and when asked said she was going to sing ‘Tide Is High’. Cue former Kitten telling words to the effect that it was pretty brave attempting a song by Atomic Kitten in front of one of the band members who sang it.
The contestant duly replied that no, it was not an Atomic Kitten song she was doing, it was a Blondie song. And the crowd went wild :-) The look on Ms Kitty’s face was not well pleased and naturally she voted no. But fair dues to the contestant, who stood her ground.

        1. Slightly Bemused

Heh! No worries, f_lawless. I was aware that Blondie was a cover. What I guess I did not get across, and the contestant did not either, is that they are different interpretations, with the original being more rocksteady, Blondie being more reggae, and Atomic Kitten being more pop and R&B.
If I recall correctly, one of the other judges made a comment to this effect on the reggae version presented, but the puss on the face of the former Kitten said she was not buying it.

Van The Man: Days Like This

Every time I hear this it brings me back to June Bank Holidays spent at the Cat Laughs festival in Kilkenny.
Before kids or mortgages a gang of us would head down each summer; weather always seemed to be great.

Days spent around the town having the craic and a few drinks. Evenings doubled over at the comedy.

I remember seeing Zack Galifianas and his piano routine, the absolutely filthy Mike Wilmott and almost wetting myself courtesy of Barry Murphy his take on this You Tube mashup of Walker Texas Ranger and Keyboard Cat (https://youtu.be/SJ5w4MkFofc)

Not exactly a holiday one, but was during a summer in a sunny place, and the place where I met the mother of my daughter. This song was really big in Kosove, where Turkish is a second language to the Albanian population there. So lots of Turkish songs on the radio, with this being on at least 10 times a day.

Holly Valance did a cover later. Her version was only better in her carefully concealed nudity, using a trick later employed by Rihanna in Umbrella.

Rockaway beach by the ramones. Everything about it screams summer holidays. Down the shelters with the lads, ghetto blaster blaring out ‘its alive, one smoke between three of us, acne, horny and skint.

Was on hols in Lanzarote in 2002. I’m just after getting divorced.
Brand new GF, intelligent and witty af, never a dull moment.
She booked us on a catamaran day trip/booze cruise.
It’s full of Irish nurses and the ratio was 5 or 6 to 1?
Mighty session all afternoon and we continued at a little bar
in the harbour, tequila cocktails and shots. One of the little nurses was
flirtin like mad and before things got messy, I was in a taxi back to the Fariones.
Went for a bit to eat, then up to the apartment.
Low and behold, there in front of our door was the flirty nurse.
Lying there on the mat, unconscious and butt naked.
The GF starts laughing, opens the door, steps over nursie, turns to me and says,
    – that is your problem Captain’90, make sure she gets home.
Turns out they were staying in the same apartment complex and we must have mentioned which apartment we were staying in. Doh!
I ended up having to carry her two floors down and across to the other side of the complex and into one of the nurses rooms. The party was still goin on and so I stayed for a few beers. Would have been rude not to.
The next time I see the flirty nurse, she’s on the Late Late Show.
She had just had one of those blind wedding things and is in the audience being interviewed by Pat the Plank. The GF points her out to me and says,
    – look, there’s that mermaid you caught in Puerto del Carmen!

Darn! I was hoping for a link to the Late Late Show so we could get a glimpse of the flirty mermaid :-)

I had a bad divorce about that time. Hope that now you are doing better, and your life is happy.

        Hi Slightly,
I tried to find it online but my Google skills are worse for ware these days.
I have an old college mate in RTE archives, John T. but I don’t think he’d appreciate the request if I called him for that one :)
She and her new hubby were the first couple to get hitched that way back in 2002/3 or so the claim was on the show that night. She got the better deal I think?
Yeah I think we swapped war stories briefly once before and remember you went through the mill too. All good now, hope life is being kind to you.

        1. Slightly Bemused

Thanks, mate, I am in a better place than I was. Which I guess is all you can ever wish for :-)

And I was really only joking about the link. The lady deserves her anonymity and, I hope, her happiness.

People saying Madonna’s “Holiday” is the answer are only partly correct. The fully correct answer is Mc Miker G and DJ Sven’s Madge-sampling “Holiday Rap”

    Altogether now:
“We gonna ring-rang-a-dong for a holiday
We’re going to London and New York City
And we take a little piece of Amsterdam”

Bowie inspired by avant-garde musician Scott Walkers late 60′ recording of Briel, recorded his own version of Amsterdam.Briel’s Amsterdam is a very powerful song telling the shore leave stories of sailors in the ‘dam,John Peele favored Bowies version which is where i first heard it,Bowie’s version transports me to many rainy backgammon filled afternoons and evenings,in smoke filled cafe’s in the ‘dam.

Before Ibiza became a haven for clubbers and party goers dancing to Rave music and Balearic house…
A glorious Summer, joining in on a sunset hippie dance party in Ibiza on Benirras beach where someone had a cassette boombox plugged into a vintage Marshal amp and speaker stack blasting out Bob Marley singing the Sun is Shining

“Sun is shining, the weather is sweet
Make you want to move your dancing feet”

    A little bit of heaven…

Oh. A second entry. Rhapsody in Blue. The LA Philharmonic Orchestra played it at the Hollywood Bowl one balmy summer’s evening, many, many years ago. That soaring intro, the sultry laziness of it. Wonderful.

    ‘Song’ is stretching it, obvs.
