It sure is a load of dross. Even the phrase “punching above its weight” gets in there. Trainee journalist or what?

A cursory Google suggests that she left school in 2012, spent her time at Cambridge writing articles for the Tab and endorsed the Conservative party in the 2015 general election.

The comments would give BS a run for its money. So, are you, pretending to be a Brit, commenting on an Irish site about an Irish site commenting on British sites?

    Seven new cases of C-19.
Out of a population of 5 million.
    The surge continues …

    1. italia'90

      “Seven tests returned positive”
      or
      “Seven people tested positive”

Seven cases sounds like 7 hospital cases does it not?
      Your actively helping them Dave

      1. Charger Salmons

You would think at this stage the authorities would be able to make that clear.
According to NPHET the situation has ” stabilized ” in the past week after showing ” worrying ” signs of a surge in the previous two.
Yet NOTHING has changed over those three weeks. No new pubs have opened, the weather has been broadly the same and if anything more people have been using shops, going back to work and returning from holidaying abroad.
The longer they drag out their ludicrous attempts to completely eradicate this virus the greater the financial damage to the health of this country.

      1. Charger Salmons

You could try matching it with the rest of Europe including those countries where schools have been back for months and bars, restaurants and tourist businesses are open and trading.
I know you will be the first to whine loudly when the pandemic subsidies end, companies close, unemployment skyrockets and the taxes start making your eyes water.

I’m sick and tired of covid at this stage – I wouldn’t mind just getting it and be done

          1. dav

yeah but the waste of resources trying to keep you from your welcomed end, is a cause of concern

          2. scottser

Waste of resources indeed. Not like that 16 large pay rise for junior ministers, that’s serious value for money right there.

I understand the sentiment, I am also pretty sure I had it in February, I wish the world would go back to normal too ( too much to hope for a better version of normal )

      1. Charger Salmons

        Quick questions.
If much of Ireland still remains closed, its citizens are bring urged not to travel abroad, incoming tourists are being required to quarantine for two weeks and the tourist and hospitality is flat-lining why is the rest of Europe not ?
Either Ireland has failed to get on top of Covid-19 or it is still over-reacting to a far,far greater degree than its neighbours.
If either of these reasons is the case why aren’t our politicians being held to account for this ?

    2. Junkface

I wouldn’t want to come even close to getting it. Some people are reporting strange ailments after recovering from it like neurological issues, migraines, constant fatigue, loss of taste etc. It’s a very strange list of things, and it’s growing. It seems to have had stronger effects in some regions more than others.

I’m sick of the lack of normality myself, everyone just wants to enjoy life.

For anyone interested- Ireland’s best known critic of the government’s CoVid-19 strategy Dr. Marcus De Brun- is BACK. Twitter account has been restored – technical issue maybe? This is an interview on The Irish Inquiry YouTube channel with Dr. Alan Palmer from the US.

Mandatory Masks on Public Transport. What’s Next? Just over one hour long and well worth a watch if you are in anyway interested an alternative view point on the subject. It is worth pointing out that this guy was appointed to The Irish Medical board by Simon Harris so he is reputable medic.

What’s your point? You understand what libel is and what free speech is… Don’t you?

      1. class wario

“trans people are all men in dresses looking to rape innocent women in toilets”

        “inspiring free speech!”

“jk rowling is acting the nob”

        “bring in the libel lawyers!”

        1. Clampers Outside

And who said that first one, not JK…
Why don’t you quote the rape threats she got? That’s rhetorical btw…

Again, back to the question, what’s your point?

          1. class wario

it’s really fascinating seeing one of the self-avowed free speech warriors go to bat for a system stacked massively in favour of extremely wealthy people being and allowing them to be massively litigious and instantly silence any and all criticism of them. but as we know, random twitter arguments are a much bigger threat to ‘free speech’

          2. Clampers Outside

Funny how you sound like Nigel who believes accusation without proof is a legitimate form of argument.
He specifically said so himself and went further when he insisted the onus is on the accused to prove innocence.
That means he does not believe in innocence until proven guilty – in due process – a corner stone of civilisation… and he then says he has no authoritarian streak.

The lack of awareness, what can succinctly be described as self professed ignorance, is off the charts…. Oh well… at least he wears it on his sleeve for all to see.

          3. Nigel

That’s odd. You don’t seem to mind the rape threats targeted at the victims of Gamergate.

(Of course, ideally, rape threats would routinely be a matter for serious police investigation, regardless of whether the target was silencing their critics with litigation or not, but we all know the internet is the last bastion of free speech where The Man can’t opress or silence rape threateners.)

          4. Clampers Outside

Those threats are vile, and do please stop assuming you know what I think ya silly.

          5. class wario

“libel is libel” lol big cop out here.

“innocent until proven guilty” is a legal concept specific to court proceedings.

Anyway, my lawyers will be in touch re the ‘spanner’ slur used against me.

And in sports news, Ireland cricketers take centre stage next week in a series of one-day games against England that will be screened on TV around the world.
The squad is currently in a bio-secure bubble at a hotel at Southampton cricket ground ahead of the first game next Thursday.
It’s a huge opportunity for Irish sport as countries around the world starved of cricket on TV will pick up the rights to show these games which ordinarily wouldn’t get a look-in on the schedules.
Tough ask though – some promising young Irish players up against a hungry England team led by legendary Irish captain Eoin Morgan.
    Should be a cracking series.
Under current rules the Irish team will go into quarantine for a fortnight on their return home in August except for the players from Northern Ireland.

Before that you may wish to tune in to Sky’s coverage of today’s first day of the 2nd England v West Indies test match at Old Trafford.
If only to behold the sight of the magnificent Rahkeem Cornwall, the Windies 22-stone spin bowler.

Following on from my post yesterday re: legal opinion of UK Barrister Francis Hoar- about the wearing of face masks- Sainsburys have obviously taken their own legal advice because they sent this tweet out.

“We won’t be challenging customers without a mask when they enter or when they are in store since they may have a reason not to wear a mask. Karen”

    https://twitter.com/sainsburys/status/1286275914926632961

They usually sign their tweets with a name but I suspect this one is extracting the urine.

I can’t find any evidence as yet but it is being suggested that Tesco and M&S have adopted this policy too?

-rev for BS in UK was £309m in the year to March, up from £285m the year before.

    Given the above:

Rishi Sunak announced a review of carried interest currently treated as a CGT and taxed at 28%.
This has not been received well, the UK has a borrowing requirement of 322 Billion this year, they need cut spending by 60 Billion according latest OBR report.

If the UK changes the carried interest rules it will have a devastating effect on the city.

This is a deep dive by The Intercept into PE/Hedge Funds and returns, with Colony Capital about steal the last great development site in Dublin, its worth a read.

-investing in private equity, hedge funds, and private real estate (“alternative investments”) hasn’t been worth the exorbitant fees paid to the industry.
-all three areas of alternative investing have significantly underperformed for at least a decade.
-in files released by the BlueLeaks hack, the FBI has raised concerns about private equity and hedge funds as vehicles for money laundering.
-pension funds globally have continued to invest more and more into alternative investments, growing from 6 percent in 1999 to 23 percent at the end of 2019.
