@Charage – You might as well apply for your green card early. Remind me about the cutting red tape line.

The thing is on this occasion Varadkar is absolutely right.
The €350 PUP was intended as an emergency lifeline to keep families off the breadline.
Not pay for some scrote to take his family on the lash in Santa Ponsa for a fortnight.
They should immediately cut it to the dole level of €203 a week like everyone else who is unemployed.
    That will concentrate the minds.
Why should my taxes pay for someone else’s holiday ?

For a lot of people who are renting, being on the normal dole may be preferable because they can then can rent allowance. It won’t cover the full amount and the landlord has to agree to it but the total amount may actually be higher.

I am assuming you cannot claim rent allowance on the special payment of course- anyone?

“Why should my taxes pay for someone else’s holiday”. ?
Thing is that holidays are usually paid for well in advance, while people are in work. So the money used to pay for them is already what’s left after income tax, and there’s also VAT added to the price of the holiday. You can be sure that the income tax and VAT paid is in excess of any PUP payment, and even more so if it’s a family going on holiday.

I started paying off for a holiday in May last November. I’m not on PUP but I have no problem with my taxes paying people while they’ve been forced out of work. I also have no problem with them taking a foreign holiday when they have no chance of a refund if the don’t go.

you’re just trolling, but a scorte as you call another human won’t be on 350 / week, you would have to have had a job in the first place,
unfortunately your trolling is actually some hateful bitter condescending begrudging people’s thoughts

Actually Janet a great many people were on the €350 a week PUP who earned far less than that immediately before the pandemic.
Part-timers who did a few hours for beer money suddenly found themselves being handsomely paid to get a lockdown tan.
And our useless political leaders have taken four months to realise this which is why payments are only now being reduced in line with previous earnings.
Trouble is they’re closing the stable door after that billion euro horse has bolted.
No bother.Add it to the bill along with the EU budget and emergency funding money grab that’s coming down the pipe.
You’ll be paying for it in high taxes for the rest of your working life.No more coming home with stuffed donkeys from Torremolinos for you …

so for people who that is not the case should have to suffer and be punished as well, not good enough,
you shouldn’t assume everyone is on the beer, it’s just ignorant

A sufficient number to warrant a PUP reduction in September, otherwise why would they do it ?
            Keep up Rip Van Winkle.

    4. scottser

Anyone who got the PUP was working prior to covid. In fact it’s their own taxes that paid for their holidays.
If you want to define a scrote in some way, it would surely incorporate ‘aggressive’ and ‘ignorant’, like your comment.
      Hypocrite.

            I’m aware of that
my comment read SOME people blame a class system foisted on us , I hear it used as an excuse for a particularly mean spirited quality that exists in Irish society, I don’t think it’s true or an excuse, I repeat I just think they are miserable cun*ts

Well, I listened to Foley and Martin last evening, delivering their roadmap for schools re-opening. Two speeches full of waffle with very little detail but with various references to how great schools are, what’s done inside the walls, and how great the students and teachers are.

What we heard was €375m repeated ad nauseam, ‘unprecedented’ repeated over and over, ‘roadmap’ repeated over and over, ‘1000 teachers’ repeated over and over, but not much actual detail about the plan.

Foley must have written her own speech as it was the type that a teacher would write to address a classroom. Up her own.

There is a massive logistics problem as regards school buses. The majority outside of the cities are run by private operators with small fleets. With social distancing, the number of trips will have to double at least. That will probably mean that some children will end up at school gates very early – maybe 7 am – in the morning, and get home very late in the evening. Primary and secondary students are also mixed on buses.

I reckon Foley is no Stormin’ Norma.

1080 teachers to be taken on? €53m allocated? = approx €49000 per teacher. Obviously no intention to employ them very long.

They’ll probably get paid day rates, in secondary sometimes hourly rates. Many new graduates work with those conditions, in secondary in particular, hopefully they will be given priority of employment.

-Boris Johnson’s New Tactic Against the Virus: Urge Britons to Lose Weight

wow-the Brits have become more yank, pound by pound, sad.

“As part of the government’s new obesity strategy, advertisements for any food high in fat, sugar or salt will be banned on television and online until 9 p.m. to avoid hours when children are most likely to see them.”

“Promotional offers like “buy one, get one free” on fatty or sugary foods will also be prohibited.”

-Government statistics show almost two-thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese.

oh my…245 pounds when he was hospitalized in April. Even with his recent slimming, Mr. Johnson, who is about 5 feet 10 inches tall, would still rank as obese.

“Mr. Johnson, who last year described a levy on sugary drinks as “sin stealth taxes” and warned of the “continuing creep of the nanny state.”

Not sure a ban on fast food ads is going to address underlying causes of unhealthy lifestyles (and one can be quite thin and incredibly unhealthy) – stress, anxiety, overwork, low pay, bills, rent, accessability issues, over-reliance on cars, pedestrian-and-bike-unfriendly cities, pollution, etc.
