The Square Tallaght, under construction (above), was opened on October 23, 1990
Stop that.
This morning.
The Square, Tallaght, Dublin 24.
Security officer Jade Corrigan, Dustin the Turkey and the gentleman operating him (out of picture) celebrate The Square’s 30th birthday .
The country’s biggest shopping centre with 700,000 square feet of retail space, The Square has been an integral part of the Tallaght community and its environs since its launch in 1990 (in fairness).
Why is it called ‘The Square’?
Good question. Especially as its pyramid-shaped.
Ah, but what shape is the base of a pyramid? eh, eh.
Oh very good
Because there are 700,000 feet of them.
Oh we told this one as a joke when we were kids. “Because the people of Tallaght can’t spell pyramid.”
Sorry my Tallaght hommies.
I was beginning to wonder whether anyone would get there!
Also though, it’s not squared shaped as can be clearly seen here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/The+Square+Tallaght/@53.2865947,-6.3716474,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x8aa277633338550!8m2!3d53.2865928!4d-6.3717012
I’ve always thought it is badly designed because it doesn’t flow naturally and you often have to double back on yourself instead of being able to circulate back to where you started.
Shopping centres are designed that way to keep you wandering around in the hope that you’ll buy something..
That makes sense but the Square seems worse than any other shopping centre I’ve visited in this respect
Yeah, in all fairness it is fairly crap all right..
its called the square as a nod to Town Square / meeting place etc. .. its an awful kip of a gaff…
