The Irish Electoral College

at

For the week that’s in it.

If all Ireland had an Electoral College.

Suggested by Gavan Reilly.

Compiled by Next Irish Election, who write:

Electoral College apportionment on an Irish scale, with the 310 Electoral College votes coming from: 160 Dáil, 90 MLA & 60 Seanad.

Dublin City highest on 26, Belfast City on 16 and Cork County on 15. Big spread of counties on 7 Electoral College votes. Longford and Leitrim on 2 each.

FIGHT!

Thanks Vanessa.

If you look at the 2020 GE and took the first preferences in each area – with a winner-takes-all in each of these college places. Who would win?

      Well since you asked
      https://www.irishtimes.com/election2020/results-hub btw

1st Counts from 39 Constituencies – first past the posts on 1st prefs

      the current Government (6)
      2 Fianna Fail TDs
      2 Fine Gael TDs
      2 Green TDs

the rest of the house (and I excluded Sean O’Feargail and included the next declared from votes cast in Kildare South)
      26 Sinn Fein
      5 Indos
      1 Social Democrat

I get you would prefer to pool all the 1st prefs from the total tickets
      in each constituency
but you’re the lad with that kinda time and determination

      But still Nationally https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Irish_general_election#Results
      Sinn Fein 24.5 Nationally
next up Fianna Fail 22.2, then Fine Gael 21.9

The interesting Stat from the National Combined are the Greens
under 1st past the post there, the greens would have got two seats, from 7%
the same as FF & FG, so kinda makes them all the perfect partners in Government (‾◡◝)(‾◡◝)(‾◡◝)

        First look;

If you look at the 2020GE and took the 39 constituencies separately and look at first preferences only you get:
        SF: 14 constituencies
        FF: 10 constituencies
        FG: 8 constituencies
        Others: 7 constituencies

and if each constituency gave all seats to that winner:
        SF: 60 seats
        FF: 42 seats
        FG: 29 seats
        Others: 28 seats

I was going to apply this breakdown to the big list above – but realized it includes the MLAs and, (bizarrely in my opinion) the 60 Seanad seats, so I didn’t bother.

BTW “Others” above should probably read Independents
