Ra’Lickers…!
Terrible times.
Ooh ah up de…
Not all of those that attended the many H-Block protests in Dublin were ‘Ra supporters – many were ordinary, law-abiding citizens displaying a deep concern. As usual, a certain cohort of extremists inflicted damage on British shops and clashed with Gardaí enroute to the British Embassy, and the archives are full of evidence of this. The general public were horrified at the the pace of events in H-Block and the responses from Thatcher’s government. It was a time of real compassion and humanitarian outcry. Across the city, black flags on crude wooden batons hung from windows of houses, and appeals were made to politicians at local and national level to step in and try and appease the situation. Bad times.
+ 1.
Now I remember why I couldn’t wait to leave this country in the early 80s.
Last pic: “Haughey can save Bobby Sands life. Will he stand idly by”
One thing hasn’t changed in Ireland – the government gets the blame for absolutely everything.
And of course Lynch did not include the word ‘idly’ in his famous broadcast.
This must have been misquoted as often as Dev’s ‘comely maidens dancing at the crossroads’
( though ‘comely’ seems to have been included in the scripted version…not broadcast).
