An outstandingly brilliant, serious and restive mind. If only we had had more of them.https://t.co/Obc38lcMXO

The Field Day group based in Derry made an important contribution to the literary and intellectual life of Ireland. Their published anthologies of Irish writing – literary, historical and socio-cultural topics – are available in good libraries for readers to dip into. Seamus Deane & the playright Brian Friel were towering figures in the Field Day group.
Back in the day I was lucky enough to have been gifted a signed copy of Reading in the Dark and a full set of all James Joyce’s works that he was general editor for Penguin Classics. I met him on a couple of occasions and he was always decent to me. May he rest in peace
Brilliant mind and writer, and, as we were honoured to discover, a very witty character. RIP.
May he rest in peace. A wonderful man.
