I’m Walkin’ Here

at

This afternoon.

South William Street, Dublin 2.

Dublin City Council has begun works to pedestrianise a number of streets in the city-centre.

From today, the following four streets will be either traffic-free, or have sections of them traffic-free daily after 11am: Anne Street South from the junction of Dawson Street; South William Street from Exchequer Street to the Brown Thomas carpark exit (above); Drury Street from just after its junction with Fade Street to the Drury Street underground carpark, and Dame Court from Exchequer Street.

Finally.

Great to see. Hopefully the hospitality businesses on the street expand out to use the road space effectively.

yea great idea. let’s all sit in the pissing rain and catch the hail stones in our glasses. They can market it as free ice for your drinks.

Any other public amenities you think should be given to business owners to make a free profit from?

Is this being done as a Covid/Social distancing solution or is it being done as part of of the Councils non-Covid agenda?

  3. Broadbag

It’s another stealth measure to try and frustrate motorists out of their cars and on to bikes, the cycling mafia in charge of the council forcing their agenda down everyone’s throats again.

Quite a lot of people with mobility issues will be further excluded from society, and it also impacts lazy people like me, so I’m against it!

People with mobility issues cant use this street as it is. It’s barely useable for people without mobility issues when was the last time you saw someone in a wheelchair in that part of town. If anything efforts like this will improve access for everyone.

I meant people with mobility issues can’t hop on a bike into town and public transport is garbage, one wheelchair per bus and most lifts in Dart stations are broken. They could access these areas by car, but not now.

Damn them and their clean air agenda, trying to make Dublin like almost every other civilised Western City. Well 2% of the way towards it.

Lol. These streets are simply not made for motor traffic and I am 100% behind any measures to take private motor vehicles out of the central areas of Dublin. And I am a driver to boot – love my car – but there are just some places it should not be allowed to go for the benefit of all who want a more pleasant, less toxic and fun city centre.

      1. Brughahaha

And how do all those restaurants and businesses get deliveries …Dobby the House Elf again?

          1. Bitnboxy

@Brughaha – Are you that thick? Deliveries happen the same way as any other pedestrianised area in Dublin and the world- at designated times and also access at any time for emergency services. It’s really not rocket science.

      2. Slave to the Rhythm

But you are also a silly.

I would love to drive in this street now just to annoy the hell out of sanctimonious, bullying twits like yourself.

    3. Daisy Chainsaw

That part of Dublin is already extremely frustrating to drive through anyway and has been for years. It’s easier to park near public transport and use that to get into the area either via Stephen’s Green or Sth Great George’s St.

Why would we want cars driving on every street in a city centre. How does that make the city a pleasant place to be?

  4. Dhaughton99

Are they going to do the Northside, other than Capel st because of the one hip bar?

      1. Dhaughton99

They had a great restaurant place on Liffey street, where lots of different restaurants and take aways were under one roof. It’s a bloody Dealz now.
