It Takes A Village

at

Yesterday.

Malahide village, county Dublin.

A High Court challenge has been brought against Fingal County Council’s decision to pedestrianise New Street in the village to allow for outdoor dining.

Meanwhile, this morning.

Representatives from the hospitality industry are due to hold talks with Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin.

The Hospitality Forum, which includes hotel, restaurant and licensed vintner groups, meets ministers every three or four months.

Today’s long scheduled meeting is timely as it will be the first opportunity for the hospitality industry to engage with members of the Cabinet, which yesterday paused the reopening of indoor activity for an unspecified period of time.

Absolute boopers – a small minority of empty vessels in Malahide making a lot of noise about nothing.

I’m not sure if they’re just bored and looking for an outlet – check their Facebook page, the rage is unseemly. Judging from their posts the whole future of Malahide is threatened. Armageddon !

I think the outdoor is dining is lovely, weather permitting. Malahide is actually picturesque enough to pull it off.

I don’t live there but have cause to pass through and sometimes even stop and smell the flowers.

The vibe around New Street is lovely, charming even – really great buzz and noticeably better for business.

A chap i know had been bleating about how it had negatively impacted on the village, social disorder etc. until i pointed out to him that (at that time) it hadn’t been pedestrianised yet.

he’s probably only an old blow in himself, sure there was bearly a car there when I was growing up and none of this new money airs….social disaster

It looks lovely. I know Malahide myself, haven’t been there in years though. It always had a lovely little village, so the pedestrianization works very well I think. I can’t understand why anyone would have a problem with it. There are a few roads you could use to get around the new street area, if deliveries need to be made or whatever. With the warmer weather there is no better time to do it.

there’s ring back roads around the whole thing, some people are only happy when they are moaning

I’m always out there. I’m a big fan of some of the restaurants out there. Fish Shack has amazing seafood if you’re ever out that way :)

But yep the new street is lovely. There’s a great atmosphere out there now.

Might be crappy in the winter, but it’s great at the mo.

I enjoy that shack too :) sure gimme a wee wave next time, used to be I couldn’t get down the road without Mum talking to absolutely everyone, lots long gone now,
as Scottser would say…Get off my lawn

A wave? Surely that would contravene Broadsheet rules :-)

Maybe we could do a simple knowing nod to each other. Just like at the end of The Dark Knight.

Although it might turn into this if it takes too long…

id welcome the challenge. instead of pro car lobby groups pushing to maintain roads with legal action. let them have their day in court and see what the law says. if pro car lobby groups win HC challange, when we will know what exactly we need to change to make it more pro pedestrian.

the photos make the place look really nice.
