In recent times I’ve taken thousands of photos of Dublin sculptures and plaques & been posting them on Instagram… I Have also set up a History of Dublin YouTube channel (above featuring Seán Heuston’s plaque at Heuston Station).

What, no mention of Fr Pat Noise? I am shocked, shocked I am!
Ok, I may kid, but I did enjoy that. I do love learning about little titbits of information about the country, and especially with Little Slightly coming over for her first visit as an adult, I have been looking for ideas of places to go with a history behind them. I have read that plaque in Heuston Station a few times while waiting for the train home, and always loved the artistry in its creation. Therefore, it is nice to now know who was behind this work. Thank you, James!
It also put me in mind of the statue and plaque commemorating Admiral William Brown on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. Primary driver (or would pilot be better?) in the formation of the Argentine Navy. A colleague from there was recently in touch about him, wondering if he was recalled at all here. I was glad to tell him about the statue. He was interested now as their Independence Day is 9 July, so just a day or two away..
Statues and plaques are often missed out on, telling stories that the bustling crowds hurry past. Some good, some interesting, and some telling stories that really should not be forgotten, no matter how painful.
There’s an impressive bust of Admiral Brown in Foxford; his birthplace.
I did not know that, thank you.
Little known fact- The Seán Heuston bridge upon which the Luas hammers back and forth, is actually one of the most expensive in Ireland. It is listed and as a Luas weighs twice that of an articulated truck- it had to be rebuilt from the inside out.
As civil engineering rumours goes- probably just from gossiping lesbians- one of the corner stones was lowered down in the wrong direction, at a cost of 20k a day – for.three.months.
How is that NCH going?
excellent headline btw
