From top: Fine Gael Councillor and Dublin Bay South bye-election candidate, James Geoghegan; former Taoiseach John Bruton

This morning.

Further to fallout from Una Mullally’s Irish Times profile of Dublin Bay South Fine Gael candidate James Geoghegan…

…via former Taoiseach John Bruton

…Una Mullally fails to mention his work as an elected member of Dublin City Council, where he serves on key committees. Perhaps this sort of work is below Ms Mullally’s elevated field of vision.

She does, however, mention that he worked as an intern in the EU delegation in Washington, while I was ambassador there.

His work included writing reports on meetings he attended in Washington DC on behalf of the EU.

They were of a standard of insight, thoughtfulness, and readability to match those authored by some of the excellent diplomatic and professional staff of our delegation.

I believe, on that direct experience, his election to the Dáil would enhance the Oireachtas as a whole.

John Bruton,

Dunboyne, county Meath

You couldn’t make it up.

Besides this point, Una Mullally gets on my wick. It is a bit of reverse snobbery bashing. She is too cynical. I’d like to like some of her points but she goes too far and waffles on.

Exactly what has Una Mullaly done anyway. Remember when she got a cushy gig from the govt for being a lesbian, from a govt minister who is also a lesbian.

For years IT commenters have lambasted her columns for being juvenile and just generally well below par for a broadsheet opinion piece, now she’s all grown up, and hasn’t much to show for it.

Disclaimer: I don’t vote FFG, I have no opinion on this candidate, but I can call out an amateur hour hack like Mullaly all day, cherry picking her facts about a candidate she doesn’t favour.

The smell of fear in Fine Gael is palpable
Varadkar has ordered all guns on deck by the look of things
If Jimmy boy fails to get elected in Fine Gaels home turf it will reflect badly on Leo.

not sure how taking minutes helps getting Granny Nelly moved up the St. vincents waiting list or submiting objections to new apartments obstructing locals views of dublin bay.

Frances Fitzgerald describes James Geoghegan as “passionate”. Now there’s an image that will never leave me
