Sterling dived and there was also two balls on the pitch as he did it. really poor refereeing. pity Denmark didn’t have enough in the tank tonight but they came closer than I thought they would

good luck to Italy on Sunday!

“I haven’t seen Sterling drop that fast since Brexit.” I will be skipping the papers on Monday if they win it.

    2. scottser

Plus someone with a laser aimed at kasper’s eyes for the kick.
      They’re never not at it.

    3. Joe F

The amount of bitterness towards England is pathetic. Sure, it was a dive by Sterling, but overall England were the better team. I can never understand those people who support English clubs and use the word “we” when talking about them, then are desperately hoping the same players lose when they put on a England jersey! It’s a pretty sad state of affairs that so many peoples good form depends on England failing at something.

      1. scottser

Its not bitterness, they cheated. Why don’t you enjoy the comments on say the daily express online and come back to us with your new perspectives on ‘bitterness’.

        1. Joe F

Why do you read the Daily Express online? You may say you’re not bitter but you clearly are!!

      2. Charlie

“Sure it was a dive by Sterling but they were the better team”
Spain were the better team v Italy but they lost. Better teams lose football games.
I think England are now destined to win this tournament. Everything has been in their favour. Less air miles. All their games (bar a holiday in Rome) have been at home and now in front of their home fans…easy side of the draw…and a very poor ref decision. It looks like it will be coming home for the first time since never.

      3. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

the better team doesn’t mean anything in football.. there I said it

        1. Slave to the Rhythm

lol at all the football experts in here too
ye are grand wee girls, especially you Giggidy

    4. GiggidyGoo

Careful on Sunday now. Don’t bump off any TV sets – you might make Sterling fall. Any truth in the rumour he’s related to Juergen Klinsmann?

On a serious note, UK daily deaths are at 33, +19 on last week. Hospitalisations 2446, +717 on last week. Cases 32,548, +6,480 on last week. Hospitals have limited capacity, even if you don’t care about case numbers or believe that people dying is not significant.

    1. Micko

Yep that is a tad worrying.

But we have vaccines now. The UK have vaccinated tons of their people. The overwhelming majority are now safe- same as here.

      So what do we do?

Do we stay locked down forever as new variant after variant comes along, or do we try to get back to normality.

Yes, the UK might have to lockdown again in the winter if this gamble doesn’t pay off.

But they’re living pretty normally right now – and that’s a lot more than we can bloody say.

      1. Haroo

Or a third course would be to continue a gradual relaxation of measures throughout this year keeping in mind that we are not yet fully vaccinated and the vaccines have yet to stand up to a covid winter/”flu season”.

I don’t think anyone is advocating a permanent lockdown but I didn’t think many were advocating a complete lifting of all measures. If capacity is used to this extent in the off-flu season I dread to think what it could be in the flu season.

And as we have all learned from this shitshow of 1.5 years is that the worse the problem is when you lockdown, the longer the lockdown has to be to reduce R rates etc.

        1. Micko

Ok yep. I get that people are worries about the winter season.

But do we not get to the stage where we just accept that some people will die from Covid every year. That we eventually learn to live with Covid.

We do it with other diseases and causes and no one loses their minds

We accept the millions every single year that die from pollution for example. 8.7 million estimated in 2018

          https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/09/fossil-fuels-pollution-deaths-research

If the media was to put the figures of those that died from pollution on the TV every single day, do you think people would freak out?

They probably should, but I don’t know if they would.

          1. Cian

“We accept the millions every single year that die from pollution for example. ”

Actually we don’t “accept” it. There are tons of laws (and taxes) to reduce pollution.

If we treated Covid like we treated pollution there would be a covid tax!

          2. Micko

Yes we do accept them Cian

Laws and Taxes aren’t stopping them from dying are they?

            So what good are they.

      2. Charlie

“So what do we do”? We keep them well away from us we lease. What I’ve heard from a few mates in the U.K. is that they’re largely back to like nothing had happened. It’s more than “a tad worrying”. It’s reckless and they do reckless very well.

        1. Micko

I understand that people are scared. But the vulnerable are protected now.

But we have moved from protecting the vulnerable, to protecting the fearful.

      3. SOQ

Personally I think this whole variant thing is to cover up the fact that the vaccines have nowhere near the efficacy rates claimed. Its only a matter of time- probably in the Autumn- when they announce that the existing vaccines do not work against the new ‘strain’- and off they go again.

Except their is no evidence to suggest that people with natural post infection protection are susceptible to any new strain which means they are tactically admitting that vaccines are not as good.

As for increase in hospitalisations, that was bound to happen as a society opens up, it certainly happened in Texas for a few weeks. But then it settles into a summer endemic phase which is where it really should be.

Time will tell but you can be certain that the hysterical media will jump on every single increase like it is the end of the world. What happened to the Indian story eh?

        1. Cian

You have changed your tune – last few weeks you were saying there would be no increase in hospitalisation.

          I suppose you have form.
          – Last year when you were saying there wouldn’t be a second wave XD
          – Oh and what happened to the “it’s seasonal like flu”? UK is in its 4th wave in 18 months.

But, you are right: time will tell. But, IMO, the vaccines do work¹, and will continue to work on the variants.

¹in the same way other vaccines work – they aren’t 100% effective and rely on herd immunity to reduce the likelihood of an exposure, but even when they don’t work they reduce the likelihood of an infection which prevent outbreaks.

          1. SOQ

You know you have made a fairly accurate prediction when Cian starts with his bitchy ad hominin attacks.

You the one who spend nine months refusing to accept it was a seasonal virus sweetheart- then you obviously got instructions to change tack, because nobody was buying the BS anymore.

  3. scottser

It should have been a draw AET and Schmeichel would have handed pickford his sorry bottom on a plate duringthe shootout. He’s going to be a liability in the final.

    1. Cú Chulainn

So, is it ok to cheat now Father ? Are we all cheats now ? Makes a mockery of the notion of sportsmanship..

      1. Haroo

I would say comeuppance might be on the cards on Sunday. You did all see Belgium v Italy right? Italy love the old machinations and are champs at it. I foresee headlines of “brave lions being tricked and swindled by cheating Italians”.

    2. scottser

I will freely admit that the EPL has been a fantastic distraction this last year. And this England team is probably the best there has been for as long as I can remember. Will I wish them well? Will I fupp.

    3. Charlie

Shame the spirit of England fans isn’t a little less scrotey. They’re the only ones to boo opposing teams.

    big trouble for Digicel.
‘’The assailants apparently claimed to be agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to videos taken by people in the area of the president’s home. Moïse, 53, lives in Pelerin 5, a neighborhood just above the hills in the capital.

On the videos, someone with an American accent is heard yelling in English over a megaphone, “DEA operation. Everybody stand down. DEA operation. Everybody back up, stand down.”

    1. Johnny

Still the best in IT,while I’d agree with a lot here, it’s my opinion the US dollars will strengthen against this backdrop of anarchy,Digicel debt is in US Dollars, ithe nickels and dimes that it hoovers up from the poorest people on the planted, get ripped off in local currency which has be converted and are going be worthless soon.

Haiti is on the brink, but for Digicel little will change,.. Impoverished nation is one of Denis O’Brien-controlled telco’s key markets

-there appears be a correlation btw DOB’s power and wealth, its real low at moment and Irish media coverage of Hati,it’s gone from wall to wall to nonexistent, who remembers Havens Hero’s.

It’s only a date in the calendar of life, but I hope no other Broadsheeter’s get tragic news today.

Mind yourselves, folks, and appreciate what you have.

I’m very saddened by that healy young lad’s ďeath. I hope the gossip takes second place to the fact of a child’s death.

      1. Redundant Proofreaders Society

Very sad indeed, a waste of a young life. Equally shocking that a 14-year old boy was behind the wheel of a car.

    1. Johnny

Just that one example alone from the link,2,400 homes at say avg 350,0000.
-that FFG pen, stroke lost the state 9% in revenue on two thousand four hundred new irish homes, selling at about 350,000 each to offshore yanks.
-how much irish rent from 2,400 irish homes will be lost-tax free offshore to yanks for a minimum of ten years by this irish govt-as the guarantor of these leases.
-the reason builders and developers enter into bulk financing is not cost of funds it’s lack of them, why are so many shady, opportunistic, grave dancing yank funds buying irish homes in bulk-why?

      (Hint-answer above.)

Charger,if you change the commaspace thing, you might get away with it for a bit longer.

I recently curated an installation in my kitchen as an homage to Emin, (unwittingly it has to be said).

    I’ve titled it Unwashed Dishes.

  8. Clampers Outside

You could film yourself doing it, and release that as an art house film titled The Works of Terry Cloth :)

    £2.5 million yikes

I’d prefer to get a look inside whoever’s head that lands out more than €20 on something like this or a brick placed in the middle of some floor or a canvas painted in nothing but brilliant white dulux…

there used to be a brilliant brilliant program on C4 called “Faking It”…..it might still be on the player…I recall this one episode where they took a regular joe decorator fella and faked him up into being an artist within the month for some exhibition or other….was funny and horrifying at same time, recommended mind boggling viewing

    1. Clampers Outside

LOSure even Charles Saatchi has said that a lot of the modern art he has bought will eventually be seen to be complete rubbish… But admitted he doesn’t know which pieces :)

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

you see it’s not really about the piece but the conversation….eh hem ;)

The Examiner “Drugs Task Force Fights Suspension” is this the start of the government going towards legalization of drugs in Ireland? Will be looking out for their press release later today.
It’s pathetic how Ireland never got a handle on the drug/alcohol problem in all these years, though I’m sure the “task forces” do their best and maybe have some success, it all seems a bit twee looking at their websites. Reading the article below, not much seems to have changed, unfortunately.

I only got to see bits of the match as we were out for a work booze up. I thought the penalty decision was very soft, Sterling was barely touched, but anyway England could have been a lot better, their finishing was not best. Good luck to them in the final, I find it hard to see them beating the Italian defense.
