Whoomp! There It Is

at

Last night.

The Dail at The Convention Centre, Dublin.

Via RTE:

Micheál Martin said the current tax breaks have to be kept in place to provide social housing for families through leasing properties from these funds.

He said that if the tap was turned off immediately then 2,400 families would lose out on getting a home this year.

Mr Martin added that the future model will focus on direct building, but he said: “The reality is we need more houses.”

He said there would be a move to a new system where the State would ultimately own leased properties but this cannot happen immediately.

True, but probably not likely to have much of an impact on the vote in that particular constituency.

I’m looking forward to being told why leasing housing from investment funds for a value in excess of the cost of buying them over 25 years and having no asset at the end is fiscally prudent.

Indeed! Fine Gael have consistently attacked Sinn Fein’s housing policy stating that people would not own their homes however I fail to see the difference between this and that policy

These 2400 homes and more to come could have been bought by, and were bid for by working people. They were outbid by funds with a deal with the councils to extract rent at a fixed amount for 25 years. FF and FG prioritising the interests of the wealthy since 1922

Democracy( from the Greek Demos Crati) if memory serves – the Government of the people, by the people, for the people.

Moves like this, are without doubt not for the people. If those who chose to vote against the people in this manner should still be considered of the people is questionable. I know what I feel.

In other times there might have been heads on spikes, for such betrayal. Not advocating heads on spikes literally – maybe metaphorically

By the time a GE comes around the average Joe will have forgotten some of the treachery committed by these elected persons – to be fair there are many snakes and lots of treachery to keep track of.

How could we stop this and make sure everyone is able to see the past record of these candidates in an easy and clear manner?

…gosh what if say all your new American landlords got together in a tent in Galway, decided pool their ahem ‘interests’ in housing and policy in Ireland, who would they chose…..
2,400 shiny brand new irish family homes at say 350,000=840,000,000.
At the current prevailing stamp duty rate, for bulk buying irish family homes at 10% =84,000,0000.
New stamp duty of 1%=loss to irish state by this stroke just in stamp duty -75,000,000.

Hi it’s Declan,ah yeah fecking papers made big deal over few pints, listen I think I can save you guys 75 million, fancy a pint ?

Yep. Probably the most despicable generation of politicians in power, that I can remember. They are completely owned by the financial class and do not give a damn about Irish people, or the future of the country.

Every social housing initiative will find it’s wheels up to the axles in the mire that is Irish Local Government, which is simply unable or unwilling to play the role that Central Government has cast it for. It’s a dead-end, a non-runner & the Government know this, by now.
While the increase in our population continues like a Globalist’s Wet Dream, allowing these funds to buy up huge swathes of housing stock fits the bill for our Neo-liberal parties. The ”you will own nothing” mantra of the WEF gets adopted as actual policy, the funds will profit, the developers too & the middle-classes will smile at the continued but meaningless bubble in property values.
Only the plebs will lose out & frankly, who cares about them, anyway?
