Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

This morning.

Via NDTV:

China banned reality talent programmes Thursday and ordered broadcasters to promote more masculine representations of men, in a wide-ranging crackdown on “immoral” pop culture Beijing believes is leading young people astray.

Broadcast and TV institutions must not screen idol development programmes or variety shows and reality shows,” China’s broadcast regulator, the National Radio and Television Administration said, in a raft of new regulations.

The regulator ordered broadcasters to resist “abnormal aesthetics” such as “sissy” men, “vulgar influencers“, stars’ inflated pay and performers with “lapsed morals

They’re long overdue another people’s revolution, the Chinese. If would be both hilarious and fabulous if something like this lit the fuse

They’re undergoing another cultural revolution – restricting things they believe promote bad behaviours, individualism, and poor work ethic (videogames).

Not a million miles away from what we do – sugar taxes, alcohol and cigarette excises, etc. Just like that but for mental health rather than physical. And on steroids.

There is a strong whiff of desperation here from Xi, guy is clearly a megalomaniac who thinks he is Mao reborn.

Between this, the crack down on kids playing video games and other idiotic measures, he is showing how brittle and in places broken the CCPs hold on Chinese society is.

Revolutions, when they come, sometimes come from the most unexpected of triggers. I doubt this will be it but looking at the issues with stuff like 996 (Jack Ma’s famous suggestion that people should be proud to work 9-9 6 days a week), working conditions and so on, its only a matter of time before serious fractures appear. I think he has seen how much Chinese people are enjoying their relative freedoms the last two decades, especially in regards to social media platforms like Weibo and doesn’t like it one little bit.

However, I doubt it will be any of the above that causes the CCP real issues, it will be his sabre rattling in the oceans around China, loss of manufacturing jobs to places like Vietnam, Thailand etc. and the resultant fallout to the Chinese economy that will see him just vanish one day and I doubt there will be too many to mourn his passing. He’s peed on too many previously powerful figures in China and upended a lot of political traditions and functions and made a lot of enemies in the process.

There will be no revolution, the state appartus is too advanced and total, the slightest whiff of discontent will be dealt with.

For sure, not today and not in a decade but these measures show that they are concerned. When climate change starts to cause havoc then you will see how fragile their grip is.

”Tonight Matthew, I’m (Xi) going to be Winnie the Pooh!”

Sorry Broadsheet, guess you’re now blocked in China.

This is as planned, the age of the individual is over. Expect the same boot to come down in the West within 5 years. Why? Because you allowed it too.
