Last night.
Kildare Street, Dublin 2.
TDs, including Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald (above left), joined activists from The Campaign Against Church Ownership of Women’s Healthcare at a candle Light vigil outside Leinster House to remember the death of Savita Halappanavar – 9 years ago yesterday – and to ‘highlight the imperative’ for the new National Maternity Hospital to be ‘public and secular’.

the Catholic church or any other for that matter has no business near a pregnant cat never mind a woman
Ms McDonald spots another bandwagon and lumbers aboard!
“Public”. Certainly not a word you hear much in St Vincent’s.
Ever wondered why the CC were such advocates of private health care?
It would be better to see cross party solidarity on the issue of future ownership of health care facilities and their future provision for public service but it does appear to be that this is not the case you are right Elizabeth.
Catholic Church founded the hospital system. Not liberals, or atheists, or socialists. And Ireland, with its system of “Catholic” hospitals, had a lower maternal mortality rate than the entirely secular NHS.
So yeah, the Catholic Church is the baddy.
Yeah, the catholic church is the baddy.
And it only took you to 2021 to figure that out
Practically speaking Tom it is not about goodies or baddies. Its not even about evil. Apart from symphisiotomy or the medical breaking of a woman’s pelvis for ease of future deliveries at a time of minimal contraception or the generally restrictive provision of medically practiced standards on the grounds of religious beliefs of an organisation…. at the end of the day the course of direction taken by an irish public has not sought to bring the church with them. If you contend that this organisation ever provided a service then you will acknowledge that those who it is there to serve have made other choices, largely on the basis of being better informed about availible options.
remember – Simon Harris’ mitts are all over this.
