Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns (above) launched a Bill that would extend maternity, adoptive and paternity leave to councillors.
Ms Cairns said:
“Just 24pc of councillors around the country are women. If we ever want to substantially increase this proportion, then we must make changes to make a career in politics a more attractive prospect for women. The bare minimum required, in this regard, is maternity leave.
“My Bill, which I have launched today, would extend maternity, adoptive and paternity leave to councillors.
“Many political careers are launched in the local politics arena – but the lack of maternity leave acts as a limiting factor for women and a barrier to their participation in public life. It also denies the country of the representation of strong female political candidates, many of whom feel unable to progress a career in politics because of structural barriers that are placed in their way.
“Currently, female councillors must obtain a resolution of a local authority in order to avail of leave when they give birth. In 2021, it is bizarre that a reformed system of maternity leave, and other family leave, is not yet available to councillors. My Bill would ensure that leave is an entitlement – which does not require a resolution to be passed.”

But then, the lads ran distraction with an even dodgier appointment and a big Covid party, so she’ll be fine for a month or two to settle back

Fair play for bringing maternity leave onto the agenda as a minister. Good luck to her on returning to work in the public eye as a new mother.

What’s obscene about a minister’s salary exactly? What do you believe they should be paid? She makes €182k as a minister. I’m not sure that I’d do her job for that. What do you think ministers should get paid?
Separately, why shouldn’t she paid on maternity leave? Do you generally believe women shouldn’t be paid whilst on maternity leave, or is that reserved for members of Dáil Éireann?

Someone raising an issue after it starts to affect them doesn’t mean it lacks empathy for others. Similarly fair play to Holly Cairns who stood behind her, offered to drop her vote as a member of the opposition to rebalance.
Well maybe stop making her out to be some sort of crusader for maternity rights then.
I am personally glad she got sorted out with proper leave and it should have been sorted before then but lets not kid ourselves here that she has done some great thing for pregnant women above what campaigners have been doing quietly in the background for decades.

Sexism is alive and well on broadsheet
Whatever about sexism is it standard to inform public of the name of the child? Seems to personalise things in such a way that opens up issues not specific to her public office. Maybe why bs comments appear sexist … ps who is she?
