I received my “Spend Local” £100 Credit card. Stormont is the only devolved government to implement the scheme.
It is estimated that it will cost £15M , designed to help local businesses in The North of Ireland who have suffered due to Covid. It’s available to anyone who resides in NI, over 18 and can provide a National Insurance number, also it is not means tested.
However, I gather, far from stimulating the local economy, lots of types are using the full £100 at Tesco and the like to purchase gift vouchers for Amazon. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, comes to mind.
Ah here.
Damn you, Bezos.

‘he road to Hell is paved with good intentions, comes to mind.’ nice proverb.
reminds me of the 2008 crash, irish economy was in freefall but it was 1:1 sterling to euro, so everone was going up the north to spend meaning vat receipts in teh republic were hit badly.
i think EU competition laws prevent any government inititative to ask people not to spend on amazon and the like.
We’ll give you free money but you must spend it in local businesses- which take cards so… pays tax.
I would be struggling to find such if I am honest- that would be like trying to find a shop which even sells Irish cigarettes these days,
The spirit is to spend locally, not necessarily known Irish brands. Clearly. The message/moral has been lost.
Free money? No such fhing! Ultimately, the £15M has got to be repayed! Shayna hasn’t deployed the card, just yet. The Talk is, “What are you gonna spend it on”?
Personally, I’d spend it on excellent locally made strong quality men’s underwear – they don’t make them like they used to!
… and, we’d be supporting failing businesses in a down time – what’s not to like?
For yourself? Do you have a pair of balls?
…sorry to go all Pearse Doherty on this but aren’t you missing a zero…1.4m x 100 = 140m…
Quite right, luckily Shayna is not in charge of the local economy.
If I was in charge, I’d have added a zero to the £100.
