Arriving And Leaving

This morning.

Dublin Castle. Dublin 2.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan speaking to media before attending a meeting of the Cabinet.

Meanwhile…

Minister for Education Norma Foley will bring proposals to the Cabinet on this year’s Leaving Certificate, which recommend against providing a hybrid exam option.

It is being proposed that Leaving Cert students will sit a written exam, which includes additional elements of choice.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan described the proposals for a written Leaving Certificate as “fairer option” for students.

Speaking on his way into the Cabinet meeting, he said that accredited grades would not be possible this year.

Asked about Sinn Féin’s description of the proposal as “desperate“, Mr Ryan said that the alternative would have necessitated school profiling, an approach, he said, which would have been a desperate solution.

Update:

Social Democrats Education Spokesperson Gary Gannon said:

“This year’s Leaving Cert students have suffered two years of upheaval and chaos because of covid. There have been lengthy school closures and persistent absences, of both students and teachers, due to illness caused by covid and the requirement to self-isolate. We must also acknowledge the incredible stress, and anxiety, that students have been under as a consequence of covid.

“This year is not a normal year, so we cannot have a ‘normal’ Leaving Cert. The lived experience of Leaving Cert students, throughout these unprecedented two years, must be acknowledged by Minister for Education Norma Foley. It cannot be business as usual – simply because that makes life easier for the Minister and her Department.”

Is it true that 25% of this year’s leaving certs didn’t sit the junior cert?
And that the estimated grades took the junior cert into account. So how can you (fairly) assess those kids for a grade?

    Well
I’ve a Leaving Cert this year
and let me tell ye – she’s poo sick of all the shifting and changing
only last week she found out that her music practical was being scaled down to 6 minutes
from 20 – performance pieces and some chat about scales etc
And that’s a big deal as she needs to now figure out how she gets her marks out of it
Exam Registration is in, and CAO application is in
There is no changing the rules now lads

These kids have been preparing for the Leaving Cert for years
    Years
From 1st year at the very latest
They know the formats, the marking schemes and the sitting dates.
They what to do, and what they need to get done, between now and when they enter the exam hall

They’ve adapted to a new way of teaching and learning, but ultimately exam prep is still the same as it was in our day
well maybe not in mine ’cause I did eff all, until the night before, maybe
Not the one in my gaff

They are in the home run folks
where its all previous exam papers, exam notes, grinds, tutorials and Mocks
(my one has three mocks down over the last two weekends aready btw)
Practicals Orals Aurals and all that carry on start in the next few weeks

Time for everyone now to STFU
and let the students get on with it

Norma Foley has had two years in situ to make sure the class of 2022 know how their Leaving Certificate exams are going to be conducted by the Department of Ed

Changing exam formats, marking schemes and correcting protocols as Mocks are already under way
and after registration is closed and CAOs picks are in
    Is treachery

and unforgivable incompetence from a Senior Cabinet Minister

So what? What a laboured, tedious whinge.
Today’s employers look beyond the lass who scored a home run in a pre formatted class-ridden show pony exercise and value the independent, flexible self-starter who can adapt to anything and think on their feet.

          1. scottser

is that the level of retort we can expect from an ‘independent, flexible self-starter who can adapt to anything and think on their feet.’?
            oh dear.

Yeah, in fairness Foley is guilty of many many failures but suggesting she could have planned for this year’s LC 2 years ago is a big ball of guff.

        1. V aka Frilly Keane

          Guff my @ss

She’s had a good year to tidy it all up even if 2021 was a mess
to get this year’s exam cohort into some fixtures they can rely on

Besides, most of 2022 exam year have been Vaxxed + Boosted – if they wanted
So there should have been nothing holding the Dept back from business as usual

I reckon the students should all get a 10 mark bonus just for the messing around

          1. Broadbag

So yeah 1 year maybe, not 2.
            2 is just hyperbole.
The key thing is for all parents to reassure their kids that whatever the result it won’t define their lives, awful pressure on them.

  3. Boe_Jiden

the idea that kids should be stuck in at home studying all night is an outdated relic they should be graded on a wider array of factors Sinn Fein have the right idea fairer grades for everyone not everyone is a nerdy brainiac sitting at home studying all day the kids who are more social should be taken into account too
