Russia has lost 5,200 soldiers in the first four days of fighting in Ukraine, according to Kyiv’s ministry of defence.
If these figures are correct the invasion is clearly not going as swiftly as Mad Vlad expected.
As a comparison Russia lost 5000 soldiers in two years of the first Chechen War and 15,000 soldiers over ten years of fighting in Afghanistan.

      1. Joe F

Maith an buachaill (jolly good old boy)
Which of your lovely posts from Cork republic would you like me to repost?
        Iontach

        1. Micko

Ah that’s very good there Ten Pull Terry/Admiral Nelson/Charger Salmon etc etc
Now hang on a second while I refer to a completely dfferent website in Cork and give out about something you said nearly a decade ago.
Marvellous to be living in the past eh?

          ________________

Here; Joe. This is no craic at all – dunno why you do it every single day.

          1. Broadbag

            + infinity!

It’s far more tedious than the collected ramblings of Charger.

Joe F and Giggidy’s (are they one and the same?) obsession is utterly pathetic. Imagine being so rattled by what someone wrote on another website that you pursue them to another site, watching like a hawk for them to post so you can repeat the same drivel over and over again, threatening to repost something like a wee baby (I’ve read what he wrote, it’s vulgar, he got banned, end of matter) get over it and grow up for feck’s sake and stop clogging the comments section with your variations on a copy and paste, it’s utterly embarrassing!

          2. The Millie Obnoxious™

He thinks it’s terribly clever, no doubt.

You don’t have to like Charger/Terry but Joe following him around like a bad smell is worse. At least Charger offers something to think about even if you don’t happen to agree, or like the delivery of it

          3. TenPin Terry

Interestingly the only other person on here who repeatedly refers to a 10-year-old People’s Republic of Cork post is GiggedyGoo.
Often within a couple of minutes of this ‘Joe’ feller like this morning.
At all times of the day or night.
It’s not even subtle at this point.
But leave her off I say.Nowt wrong with a bit of bantz although repetition is never a great look …
Speaking of which there are 332 posts so far on yesterday’s Papers thread – is this anywhere near a BS record Bodger ?

          4. Micko

“there are 332 posts so far on yesterday’s Papers thread ”

Looks like Operation “Everyone Look At The War” is going perfectly according to plan.

Muuuhahahahaha Muhuhahahahaha (Rubs hands in evil way). ;P

          5. scottser

millie, do you not find salmons predictable?
as for joe, he and salmons deserve each other. after all if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

          6. TenPin Terry

            Poor scottser.
Never the same since his imbecilic side-kick Papi got the hump and cleared off.
There seem to be two types of people on here – those prepared to engage in debate with style and humour.
And bottom-sniffers who jibber-jabber away with inane comments on everyone else’s stuff
You’re very firmly in the latter camp.
            Try some original thought occasionally.

          7. TenPin Terry

And GiggidyGoo disappears at the same time as her other user account.
Time for some sleep after a long graveyard shift in the Portakabin counting lorries.
            How sad.

          8. The Millie Obnoxious™

            @scottser

I do. But I’ll take Terry/Salmons any day over Joe. It takes some wit and humour, and admittedly, dedication, to commit to the role as he’s done. Joe however is doggedly trailing around after Terry making great use of the copy/paste function, for no reason other than he doesn’t like the other poster’s contributions.

          9. TenPin Terry

            Here’s the thing.
            Joe is GiggedyGoo.
And in every post Joe mentions multiple usernames and in every post GiggedyGoo reckons I’m Walter Mitty.
You couldn’t make up this irony if you tried.

  1. Steph Pinker

It was interesting to observe a couple of Italian players solidarity with Ukraine in the Aviva today.

      1. George

Solidarity with people who are under attack is not political.

Sport should not be apolitical though. That is a con so that power is kept away from players and in the hands of people like Sepp Blatter. Convince players that they must be apolitical and they won’t strike in opposition to corruption. If footballers had refused to play until Sepp Blatter left then he would have been gone in a matter of days. If they refuse to play in Qatar then the world Cup does not happen in Qatar. Players are infantalised and controlled by this idea they must be apolitical. Why should they be?

        1. f_lawless

Does your stance extend to politics you are directly opposed to?. If say, a group of football players staged a walkout during a match, protesting against government persecution of unvaccinated people as they perceived it, would your reaction really be along the lines of “good on them – while I don’t agree with their political stance, I applaud them exercising their right to make a political protest”?

          1. Kim Cardassian

If you think government “persecution” of unvaccinated people is in anyway comparable with the crisis in Ukraine then you really should seek help. I genuinely mean that.

          2. Nigel

Isn’t it wonderful when you demand people support things they oppose? Yes, Nazis have the right to march, but rather than oppose them with every fibre of your being, you should applaud them exercising that right!

          3. George

I didn’t say “good on them” about anyone.

Sport and politics are already not separate. The powerful people in sports just want to keep sports people out of politics.

      2. Steph Pinker

I said I observed, maybe it was coincidence? Nonetheless, it was subtle.

And yes, politics and sport are the twain that should never ever, ever meet etc.,

        1. scottser

sport is inherently political – it has to be with that amount of money floating around it. you’d be naive to think otherwise.

      3. stephen moran

That’s incredibly naive. When has sport ever been apolitical ? Why do countires dope their teenage athletes up to the gills. From the Nazis (Jessie Ownes), to the Eastern Bloc drugs scandal durin g the cold war, to Apartheid era rugby in SA, to a Pakistan / India test, rebel tours to SA, BLM taking the knee in NFL, the Black Panther salute in 1968 @ the Olympics, Munich massacre, Sweden, Poland & Czech refusing to play Russia in upcoming matches, the Russian touch judge in the 1966 WC final, Muhammad Ali refusing to go to Vietnam and being stripped of the world title, Moscow Olympic boycott over Afghan invasion…etc etc etc….an easier question would be when is sport NOT political

        1. TenPin Terry

I’m intrigued to know why you included the ‘Russian’ linesman from Azerbaijan in the 1966 World Cup Final in your list of sporting political protests.
          Looking forward to this.

          1. Joe F

That was lovely stuff altogether that you wrote on cork republic a while back old boy

Russian banks are offering 171 rubles per in the Asian market. It closed @ 83 Friday. Looks like it will be women & children after me @ the ATM’s today as people try to turn their rubles into something that will be worth more than a head of cabbage by midweek. But no doubt they will shut all the foreign exchange booths & ordinary peoples access to $/euros. Bank runs can be silent and QWERTY these days. SberBank is fully sanctioned by the US. They are 50% of the domestic market and cannot now access $ (i.e. that far worse than being cut off from SWIFT). Russia has bucket loads of reserves in theory ($640 billion) but the key question is can they access them i.e. it would appear that most of the foreign exchange reserves are held with other central banks (mainly European) & recall Afghanistan’s assets were frozen as were those of Iran but that is small beer compared to the number this – i.e there’s possibly $300 billion plus offshore Russia don’t now control without taking into account who is storing their gold (Bank of England is the biggest custodian for foreign central banks)

The very idea that Harris and McEntee are in a race to succeed Varadkar merely confirms that FG is toast come the next election.

    1. Steph Pinker

True – if true… but Coveney isn’t going anywhere soon; he’s biding his time in the long grass and allowing others test the water. There’s no way he’ll carry the mantle as FG leader with housing, health, Covid, Russia-Ukraine to name a few very important issues simmering, especially with SF omnipresent.

Coveney will let the party eat itself and he’ll be the head once a semblance of positivity becomes a feature of Irish life again .

      1. TenPin Terry

Sadly and rarely I have to disagree with you Steph.
I’m afraid Coventry has gone from potential Taoiseach to whiney EU apologist who makes a total ass of himself when seriously cross-examined by a decent hack, which is rare enough these days in Ireland.
        Harris has too many enemies.
McEntee is the one to watch.
        Clever and cunning.
        She’s Ireland’s Liz Truss.

        1. bisted

…ah here…I’d be no fan of McEntee but she’s nowhere near as incompetent or gaff prone as Liz Truss!

          1. bisted

…oops…but since we’re being pedantic…both of us appear to have left out the hyphen!

The more famous Lynne Truss would not have approved!

          2. TenPin Terry

            Thanks Millie.
I’m not a huge pedant about this stuff normally but I couldn’t resist a tease when it’s part of a post about incompetency.
            Bisted is sound.
Likes the banter without engaging in vitiolic abuse.

          1. scottser

liz truss: uk citizens should be able to go and fight for ukraine
UK MOD: please, whatever you do, do not go and fight for ukraine
UK DOFA website: if you go to ukraine to fight you can be prosecuted on your return.

i think liz is just about charger’s level.

      2. goldenbrown

Coveney is a prince..a privileged corporate-lingoed spoofer….he failed at everything of substance that landed on his desk since the beginning…the ferrero gig is literally the only thing he can be good at as it’s all pure spoof….it’s either that, some thinktank gig or a couple of years sailing + corporate job the bro will find for him…as I understand it he’s not well liked inside FG along with Varadker…the time for spoofers is up…the fact that they’re kiting up the likes of me da’s seat and that other spoofer shows the paucity…so yeah could be FG’s time is up but it suits them the fire is hot and they don’t want to be there anymore

        1. Otis Blue

Can’t see Varadkar, Coveney or Donohue having much appetite for the humdrum constituency matters that await them while in opposition.

    1. SOQ

Even more so is the questions being raised about who is actually doing the censoring of the internet in the Ukraine right now.

Russia appears to be trying to keep the communication channels open while big tech and the US are trying to close them down so- who is trying to hide what?

      https://youtu.be/qIveKFTjW-Q?t=160

      morning Nigel
just bingeing on the Deutschland ‘83
      back later (hopefully)

here, when does the run on jacks roll and the bottled water kick off? do you know where the nearest basement is? or howto dehinge a door to make a cave?

the big question for me is where are the iodine tabs??

      ;)

  4. Micko

    The media right now

“Look at the war, Look at the war, Look at the war, Look at the war, Look at the war, Look at the war and most importantly, don’t remember we were complicit in terrifying the absolute crapola out of you for the past two years”

“Phew… think we got away with it lads”

      1. bisted

…so all that bravado you displayed here was a lie…you weren’t breaking the covid restrictions at all…instead you were cowering indoors shunning all but your kids…tut tut…no wonder you never achieved ratlicker status…

          1. Micko

“in terrifying the absolute crapola out of you for the past two years”

Ah Tom. The “you” in that sentence above, refers to YOU or another person. Not me

As in “you”, (Mr Tom) are sitting over there. Not me.

I can’t refer to myself with a second person pronoun!!

          2. Tom J

(You) Micko, seem to think that everyone was scared when in actual fact not many people were, apart from you and a few others.

          3. SOQ

Absolute BS- people were frightened out of their lives. Governments terrorised their peoples like never before.

          4. Micko

The lads and lassies I see driving around wearing masks while solo in a “mechanically propelled vehichiiiiile” would indicate differently Tom.

But anyway… I can’t hang around to chat. I have to go and disinfect my grocery shopping for the seventh time this morning.

          5. Nigel

‘Absolute BS- people were frightened out of their lives.’

This is certainly a popular straw man with your lot, mocking people genuinely concerned about catching covid, but people in vulnerable groups are probably more scared now they’ve been told to feck off and die on their own time.

          6. SOQ

No Nigel- many people were terrorised- don’t try and play it down. The propaganda pumped out from the legacy media was disgraceful.

          7. Nigel

If they were terrorised, it was by a highly contagious airborne virus that spread across the world in weeks and killed millions, not the media that kept them informed or governments that took measures against it. By contrast, the entirely invented and curated disinformation about the pandemic being fake and vaccines being poison are an actual human-driven terror campaign.

          8. bisted

…the ratlickers must take some credit for the huge uptake in vaccines…their daily diet of patent nonsense would have been laughable if it wasn’t so dangerous…I cannot believe over 90% got vaccinated and tried to do what they felt was the right thing despite Golfgate, Merriongate etc…

          9. SOQ

MANY viruses are highly contagious- the common cold is highly contagious- that is not the point, It was presented as being very VIRULENT when all the data was pointing to it being akin to a flu.

Alternative points of view, including from some very specialist experts were censored and dismissed as far right and conspiracy when in fact- they were right all along.

            Stop trying to rewrite history.

          10. Nigel

            ‘MANY viruses are highly contagious’

But not MANY spread across the globe in weeks and kill millions in two years.

‘It was presented as being very VIRULENT when all the data was pointing to it being akin to a flu.’

It is way more VIRULENT than the flu.

‘Alternative points of view, including from some very specialist experts were censored and dismissed as far right and conspiracy’

Far right conspiracies were dismissed by everyone except far right conspiracists and useful idiots.

          11. Nigel

‘Suddenly the pandemic has “vanished from our television screens”’

‘Dramatic current events dominate daily news cycles shocker.’

There was a right old barney down at the beach bar yesterday.
A Russkie was in his cups and mouthing off at the bar when a couple of American fellers took exception.
I think they were all oil rig workers ashore for a spot of R&R.
It was short and brutal but a joy to watch.
The Yanks never had to buy a drink for the rest of the day.
Apart from that all is good on gin and tonton island.

A new and regular feature called Property Plonkers named after fools prepared to pay big moolah for cupboards.

    Property Plonkers # 1

    Bloody Nora.
€425,00 for a single-storey 538sq ft one-bedroom terraced house in Ranelagh with an F BER rating and planning permission for an extension that would cost another €240,000-€400,000.
And you can only get into the one bed from one side.
Still, at least the Irish Times says it’s a desirable address AND it has a 10 foot ceiling in the sitting room …
    Madness.
    It will end in tears.
    It always does.

    Fragging speculation mounts (OK, begins):

    https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/prediction-russia-president-vladimir-putin-23232829

A security specialist who hails from West Cork has predicated that Russia President Vladimir Putin will be assassinated by his own people. Dr Andy Scollick, who is a European Defence consultant, has previously worked in defence analysis as well as advising and was working across sectors in Ukraine as well as other European nations from 2014 to 2019. The consultant has been following the current situation with Russia closely, and today made a “hypothesis” that Putin would be killed by his own people “within the next seven days”. He said: “Prediction or, rather, hypothesis: Putin will be assassinated by his own people within the next 7 days.”

(Alleged) Strange goings on in Cavan

“…A senior source said that when this happened a gun was pulled on the officer and he was forced into the car where he was badly beaten and doused in petrol. The garda was then dumped in a park near Loughan House open prison…”

“…An Garda Síochána, through the North Western Region Headquarters Control Room, identified the member’s location through the Garda AVPLS system. Uniform colleagues attended the scene supported by Armed Support Units. The members found their colleague in a disorientated state. His official marked patrol vehicle was present at the scene. There was a strong smell of an accelerant in the air, his Garda uniform was saturated with an accelerant and he had signs of physical injuries…”
