Doubtless he’s got an impressive military record then.

      What’s that?

      Oh.

Still, a comfy armchair is an important piece of kit.

How is the armed struggle going then Beret Boy – any closer to a united Ireland ?
Even the Wolfe Tones have run out of things to sing about.

I’d say that the only armed struggle you know anything about involved fending off overenthusiastic punters on the Old Main Drag.

          3. TenPin Terry

Obviously I scoured the internet looking for an Irish military expert offering incisive insight into the Ukraine crisis…

…funny you should mention a united Ireland Terry…since brexit it is inevitable…except…who wants it…the free staters don’t…the Brits don’t care…but most of all, the people up north and surrounding counties don’t want it…at least, not yet…it’s payback time…have your cake and eat it time…a transitional deal like Hong Kong will do…about 30 years sounds right…please send that nice Mr Patten, he’s already done it and he fixed the RUC!

We don’t mention charger’s ‘dishonourable discharge’, even the thought of cleaning up that sticky mess upsets his poor mummy greatly.

The Russian invasion seems to be a complete omnishambles – there’s news coming for multiple sources that they’ve lost one of there top dogs – Gen. Maj. Vitaly Gerassimov, chief of staff of the 41 Army – a highly decorated veteran – and if you read the circumstances in this thread its sounds like a farcical metaphor for much of their stuck in the Ukrainian mud campaign.

      https://twitter.com/christogrozev/status/1500959074653024259

      Crimea river

Coms and logistics win wars – sitting in a convoy with no food having run out of diesel waiting for a Turkish supplied drone to come over the horizon and take a free shot can’t be much fun for some Russian 19 year old who thought he was going on a w/e camping trip with the FCA

      1. TenPin Terry

The idea that Putin would trash the Russian economy and only use the dregs of his army while risking ignominious failure in Ukraine and worldwide condemnation for bombing civilians simply to avoid showing his best military hand to the West is simply laughable I’m afraid.

        1. SOQ

What is laughable is the propaganda spin that conscripted kids and old tanks is all Russia has to fight with.

They could invade within 24 hours if they wanted to, but as pointed out, they are keeping thier powder dry- literally.

          1. paul

they’re losing Majors and Generals as well. Must be part of Putin’s master plan.

step 1: begin poorly planned invasion
step 2: have more-or-less the entire world see how inept he is
step 3: lose the moral and ethical victory pretty much day 1
            step 4: ???
step 5: Putin becomes Tsar of the world and king of space.

          2. TenPin Terry

Certainly the concept of a dictator deliberately starting an invasion badly and taking big losses in men and equipment before suddenly unleashing his army’s true potential is an intriguing one.
Not sure many people would agree with you.
I wonder if that’s how Manchester United are playing their current season …

          3. Piotr

“taking big losses in men and equipment”

            SAYS WHO?

I’d guess a fellow like yourself has taken bigger losses in men and equipment on an average weekend

          4. Piotr

            It’s rubbish

If Mr Putin was ‘losing’ this operation, a 10-second call to his air force would end this SKIRMISH within hours. HOURS. NOT DAYS. HOURS. The difference between Russia and my own homeland USA is that Mr Putin is endeavouring to achieve his objectives peacefully as possible and with minimum bloodshed – that his why it is being done with RUSSIAN BOOTS ON THE GROUND. He is risking his compadres to avoid any suffering on the part of Ukrainian people. Can you not see this?

          5. Piotr

Yes, there is bloodshed – on both sides. Sorry but it is a war. The bloodshed is NOTHING like it would be if this was an AMERICAN or UK invasion. Then we would be talking about ABSOLUTE ANNIHILATION.

          6. SOQ

@TenPin Terry- as explained by the veteran above, it is a standard strategy.

And one employed by the British Army in rural parts of the north, at least the kids part anyways.17-20 year olds from working class areas- cannon fodder, to be picked off at long range or just blew up- sad but true.

@Piotr- but is it an invasion? Or just a tactical manoeuvre which will force the Ukrainian government to the talks table?

          7. bisted

…Piotr…are you suggesting the US and UK media would lie…surely the truth is corroborated by the eastern media?

          8. TenPin Terry

            SOQ – a standard strategy ?
I can’t think of a single military campaign waged on the concept of letting the cannon fodder take the hit before sending in the big guns.
The Six Day War – the clue is in the name.
Shock and awe – the Yanks preferred that to A Small Surprise and some Frightful Bother.
His whole campaign appears to be stumbling – it’s only 60 miles from Belarus to Kiev and he’s still not reached the outskirts of the city.
How on earth is he going to control a country full of well-armed and highly-motivated insurgents ?

          9. SOQ

With respect TenPin Terry, you don’t know much about war tactics if you think that fodder is not used. It is, or should I say they are- regularly. There is more manoeuvres on both sides of these things than a professional chess game and, Putin is a real life chess master apparently.

If the Ukrainian army is so well armed then why have they ran out of guns to issue to mercenaries? Which they have btw.

If Russia wanted to take Ukraine outright, then they would have done so by now, but I suspect that a neutral buffer country is their objective. In fact, they are upfront about stating such.

        2. Piotr

          @SAQ

Well in so far as Mr Putin has entered a supposedly sovereign state with armed force, then yes you can call it an invasion

IMO it is an act of frustration in RESPONSE to more than a decade of latent abuse by the West

But hey thats just my opinion (BACKED UP BY FACT)

          1. SOQ

It is the objective I am questioning here. The fact that, in the main, the attacks have been very focused and targeted, would suggest a full on invasion is not their plan.

          2. Piotr

An invasion to take over Ukraine? NO

This operation is a HUMAN RIGHTS and HUMANITARIAN operation borne of charity and goodwill toward OPPRESSED people of the UKRAINIAN PUPPET REGIME

If anyone questioned the bona fides of the UKRAINE ILLEGIMATE ADMIN, it is surely clear for all to see now

See how Zellenskyy puts the ordinary Ukrainian people in harm’s way and urges them forward into danger from the safety and comfort of HIS MOCKUP PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE IN A HOLLYWOOD FILM STUDIO. You really think he is in Kiev? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

      1. TenPin Terry

        You’re welcome.

Sorry folks but a article that commences: “Vladimir Putin’s pointless war…”

This special military exercise in Ukraine is many things – but it is sure as heck is not POINTLESS.

POINTLESS ARTICLE more like but thanks to the author for making that clear inside 4 words to save us all time

    1. Dell

You do know that’s from a while back and was a “die in” protest with regards to climate change ?

      1. Fearganainm

Originally some nutters used the clip to allege it was ‘COVID-19 crisis actors’

It was, as you note, a climate change protest (in Austria), reported on by German TV.

        https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-661739618421?fbclid=IwAR35n1KdezeF0g255xTUkgdUhYxHz1vgbR7v-TxT-kZ-PLnaGYw2xS5uOoc

Now the same clip has been dusted down and repurposed and is being used (probably by the same kind of nutters), with the allegation that it’s fakery from the war in Ukraine:

        https://factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com.32486M8

        1. Dell

Yeah. Saw it used yesterday for that very reason and several people in his comments section told him what it was so he went with “well it could easily be the case with this fake war”. But didn’t take it down or edit his original post to say it wasn’t in Ukraine .

    Explaining Russia’s dismal military performance

The best piece of advice I can give to someone trying to save money and reduce food waste is to look at the book Save With Jamie by Jamie Oliver. It’s a really good book, focuses on the idea that you spend good money on a piece of meat and how to effectively stretch the leftovers into tasty, fulfilling meals over 3-4 days, as well as how to manage your food so as to avoid wasted food.

Some of it may seem straightforward, but I never learnt a lot of it and so it’s been invaluable to me. We’ve saved so much money by using the basic principles of the book and cut out so much food waste.

          2. Mad

My late mother used to always cook like this so it comes second nature to me but it is a lot of work

          3. SOQ

I posted this site before but I really like it- cook with what you have.

            https://www.yummly.com/pantry-search

My rule is that no matter what you are cooking- it always tastes better with a fresh lime squeezed in.

Little known fact is that lime is a flavour enhancer, same as salt, but much better.

          4. The Millie Obnoxious™

            @SOQ

That yummly site was a great recommendation. I get great use out of it.

          5. V aka Frilly Keane

I had great fun with that first Bake off series

It was only intended to be a trailer to the CH4 opening night
Devised and cut deliberately to wind up Rotide and the other ABFers that patrolled the place then

And the reaction was totally unexpected

S2 Bake’sheet started off ok, but was missing Martco and the engagement in the comments, you could tell the place was starting to spoil,
Shur’ ye know what happened next.

            And I’ll be honest now
I’m sorry I ever bothered with the Bake Off at all

Because, looking at my entire back catalogue here
Frilly, Vanessa, + the early ones that didn’t earn a place on the contributers wall with a link
            They spoil the lot
And some of those columns deserve to stand away from Bake Off stuff. Particularly some of the comments under them.

Unfortunately Broadsheet didn’t see their way to agreeing to a Bake’sheet folder tag for all the Bake Off content, and other food, drink and bake recipes. Make it a reader co-op archive.

Anyway. Sorry but I regret having started the Baking Recipe/ foodie thing at all.

          6. V aka Frilly Keane

First season we did it here
            It absolutely was

And Broadsheet was the only Irish media to do weekly review that was unconnected uncontrived and interactive

I couldn’t give a xxxk what you have to say Mad
            Suit yourself n’ all that

I’m sorry it didn’t grow in the way it might have from the first season covered here. Because I really enjoyed doing them.

            But looking back. Now.
            I shouldn’t have started it

          7. Mad

Look I wasn’t an aficionado of either the show or your writing frankly but I did watch it once to see what the fuss was after reading one of your pieces. It felt to me like it was writing about bingo.

          8. V aka Frilly Keane

I don’t know how anyone could say it was like writing about Bingo
And expect to get away with it
            That’s a fair bit of a stretch
Like a QAnon sort of prediction

Nobody anticipated the response and reaction
Or the collective that sprung up around home baking, cooking in general, and of course the Bake Off competition itself

I get who and what you are Mad
            And I don’t care

But sometimes ye just to shut up

          9. Mad

look Frilly even bingo could be enthralling if written by the pen of a skilled writer.
If you didn’t care why still reply ?

I did like the frivolous nature of the pieces – it was a happy and silly distraction, but as time went on your heart didn’t seem to be in it. That’s all

          10. V aka Frilly Keane

            Fact is
I shouldn’t have come back with it after Frilly got cancelled
            Yr three here, Season 10
It was definitely sour, the bitterness and underbelly from the year before wouldn’t be denied

So yeah maybe it read as my heart wasn’t in it
But absolutely Yr 1 here was an outstanding series of columns and threads
and they stack up against any of the others – mainly UK based, the Mail and the Guardian’s being the most active with comments

That all said, I am now in the position to look back over all my content here, and point to that and say, I’m sorry I started it at all.

            Incidentally Janie,
I have three collections already started; 12 Frills of Christmas, Famine Breads, and stuff you can do with tinned beans.
+ some vegan stuff is coming together

But if they’re anything like that book I’ve been talking about for over a decade, you’ll be waiting (‾◡◝)
haven’t even got working titles yet

If I get a chance this weekend, I’ll throw up the Covid Blocker (tumeric) Cookies I developed over first lockdown, as I’ve no other use for it

btw Mad you should folly me on twitter to read about Bingo
Jackpot now up to 800 yoyos in Frehills

Varadkar would only love to send thousands of young working class men off to die in battle for global capitalism. Why does he insist on publically denouncing our neutrality? no one asked him. And there he is, putting ireland on Russias radar.
Even if we put billions into our military, it wouldn’t be enough to deflect a Russian invasion if they wanted to do so. The first sign of any trouble coming our way, he’d be aboard the Government jet and halfway across the Atlantic, leaving us to die.

Boris and Blighty are heroes in Ukraine matey with Zelensky and Boris talking daily on the ‘phone.
The Ukrainian military views Britain as its leading champion in Europe. The UK trained 20,000 snipers and focused training on handheld anti-tank weaponry has proved essential in the field in blunting the Russian advance. At the time Ireland couldn’t even get a ship out to the Russian navy playing silly buggers in their territorial waters.
Winning the war is more important to Ukranians than some Irish buffoon attempting to achieve moral superiority over refugees.

Monday dawned at the Hagerstown Speedway, QAnon follower Micki Larson-Olson addressed the convoy drivers from the organizers’ stage, according to videos shared on social media. Wearing a head-to-toe U.S. flag suit, she identified herself as a “Q Patriot” and suggested she was facing trial for her role in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.
“I am now a proud General Flynn digital soldier,” she said, referring to Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump’s convicted (and pardoned) national security adviser. “I am also a proud Protzmanian.” For the uninitiated, that’s a QAnon sect that believes the late John F. Bad news for the many John Bercow fanboys on here.
He’s the only former speaker in Parliamentary history not to be given a spot in the House of Lords and now we know why.
Bercow is a “serial bully” and should not be allowed access to Parliament, a Commons complaints body has ruled, as it upheld 21 allegations against him.
“The respondent’s conduct was so serious that, had he still been a Member of Parliament, we would have determined that he should be expelled by resolution of the House,” the report said.
“As it is, we recommend that he should never be permitted a pass to the Parliamentary estate.”
