many of which are no longer technically houses
into any country that’ll have them

The warm welcome given to Ukrainian refugees by the Government proves that the State has been capable of providing a more compassionate support system for asylum seekers, a leading migrant rights activist has said.
Lucky Khambule, co-founder of the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, said the decision to immediately support Ukrainians fleeing the war while migrants from Middle Eastern and African countries wait years for decisions on their asylum claims reveals a “glaring inequality” in the immigration system.
Mr Khambule said: “We’ve had the Syrian refugee crisis, the Afghan refugee crisis, there’s Yemen, there’s Ethiopia, there’s Libya – all these are conflict zones but we’ve never seen an effort from the Government like this.
“The world is praising Ireland for taking this stance but they need look into the backyard at what is happening to others.”

I read something about the UK where Ukrainians will be given immediate rights to work and / or claim benefits, which is more than others can do- I’ll try and dig it out.
Sorry my mistake- it is the EU who have given Ukrainians rights to live and freely travel, work and housing, and medical care. Championed by The Irish Times of course.

80% of the Ukrainian refugees are women and children, all of whom are fleeing from a very definite military conflict, which borders directly onto multiple EU countries that they’re fleeing into.
70% of the 2015 migrant wave were young men. The majority were from countries like Pakistan and Nigeria, not Syria – they were economic migrants. And all of whom crossed multiple countries to get to the EU, ie the EU was not their only option.
Its a lot easier to have sympathy for women with small children who’re fleeing from a war to their nearest safe place than it is military age males who’re choosing to migrate from a poor (but safe) country to a rich one half a world away for money reasons.

The vast, vast majority were not women and children from Syria or Afghanistan. We have the statistics on this and they’re very clear. The largest demographic was young males from not at war countries.
Include some radicalised who then committed terrorist offences.

As regards Ukranians:
– Easier to prove fleeing from conflict
– Easier to see danger to life
– More than likely will have proper identification documentation
– Will probably be a temporary influx as most would probably want to return to their homeland once once the threat abates.

93% of the pledges for rooms for refugees during the 2018 Syrian crisis effectively fell through.

Wow, women and kids being weaponised by an NGO. Irish people know racism directed towards them too. Ukrainians are Europeans less than 2 hour flights away and frankly being labelled with having white privilege is hardly comparable to having the living daylights bombed out of them.

4. Whichever civil servant was tasked with handling of previosly mentioned EU quotes, she or he decided that women and children are low risk. And a high political gain locally and internationally for an initial low effort. They are correct.
5. Direct provision is broken. It is not fit for purpose and it does not make any sense. Please decide do you want the govenment to fix or replace that system, or continue pushing more people into the same inhumane living conditions.
