This morning.
Government Buildings, Dublin 2.
Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee (above) discusses the Government approval for her to publish the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2022.
Via RTÉ News:
Among the measures proposed are a requirement for all candidates for judicial positions to be interviewed and to show that they have undergone judicial training or continuous professional development.
If the proposed legislation is enacted it will mean that only three people will be recommended by the Judicial Appointments Commission for each position and that only people recommended by the commission can be recommended by the Government for appointment as a judge.
All candidates will have to be interviewed by the judicial appointments commission including serving judges seeking promotion to a higher court.
The commission will also have to publish a diversity statement committing to reflecting the diversity of the population as a whole in the make up of the judiciary.

When is Helen ‘Tayto’ McEntee going to be charged?
Does this apply to those with irregular trouser lengths? ;-)
I think it only applies to them.
I see… ;-)
Also, I’ve just re-read my comment and realised it could be misconstrued as a bit saucy.
*turns head and coughs*
On the one hand de-politicizing judicial appointments is a good thing, however it then presents an issue of the judiciary being accountable to no-one. They make their own recommendations for new appointments, they are a “law” unto themselves.
Just in time for SF to take up reins..
committing to reflecting the diversity of the population as a whole in the make up of the judiciary
Surely you would have to be judged by someone of your own race then?
So 90%+ of judges will be white irish?
Or will the ethnicity of judges have to match that of the offenders – big increase in traveler judges so
Or ones who do what they are told by government.
Maybe have several judges from outside the state like in Hong Kong
Never knew that this ensures a workable judicial system as we are now aware of as two British judges resigned from Hong Kong’s courts which is not a British colony but Chinese
there’s only one race, human
Why is there photo of Michael Bublé (I think) giving the thumbs up on my deed for this post?
Consider me confused.
My feed.
And he’s still there.
Is it you or me Bodger?
It may be you, Lush, it’s from an earlier post about Bublé going on tomorrow’s Late Late.
Ok.
Thanks Bodger.
A feeble attempt to legitimise a poor recruitment process.
all candidates for judicial positions to be interviewed by their peers and to show that they have undergone judicial training or continuous professional development. Details of this training will not be made public, nor will any aspect of the interview process.
Canvassing will disqualify, unless it takes place in the Dail bar, on a Golf course or in a tent on a racecourse.
“or continuous professional development”
Whatever that might mean. Like –
I watch Judge Judy every week. Surely that must count?
Helen McEntee has been quite a disappointment to be honest. I’d her tipped to be a future leader of FG mostly due to how she handled herself during the Brexit to-do, which was quite professional.
Her subsequent performance though, Woulfe etc. has left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, the height of her achievements may well be the Beko ‘Mum of the Year’ Special Recognition award from Woman’s Way.
“the height of her achievements may well be” –
getting elected into her da’s seat, and then keeping ahead of She of the Monologues.
The only saving grace is that she ousted the other excuse for a trustworthy politician in Meath last time round.
