The Taps Are Turning Off All Over Europe

at

This afternoon.

Russian energy giant Gazprom has shut off gas supplies to both Bulgaria and Poland’s state-owned gas companies after the two countries refused to pay in roubles.

The European Union has accused Russia of trying to “blackmail” the bloc with gas, accusation which Russia has denied.

Meanwhile…

Via Paule Deane, UCC:

The impact of a long term interruption of Russian gas into Europe was studied in detail by our group in UCC. We used a computer model of the EU energy system to understand what would happen in each country if gas from Russia was not available.

Our research showed that, while gas would still flow across Europe, any interruption in supply would lead to higher electricity prices, It would also mean higher climate emissions as gas would need to travel further to reach the demand centres and older coal power stations would be used more to pick up the slack for less gas.

Europe has significant potential to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) via ships into places like the UK, Spain and France and this availability significantly helps to mitigate against interruptions in supply. Ireland does not have LNG capacity, but benefits from the UK resources which are diverse and secure.

Over a period of three to six months, the EU is likely to be able to survive a disruption to Russian gas imports. However, the picture becomes complicated when longer interruption is considered. Running the European economy for several years without Russian gas would be remarkably challenging….

Gulp.

What happens in Ireland if Russia turns off the gas supply? (Paul Deane, RTE)

Relying on corrupt warmongering dictators who think they can act with impunity and get nasty when thwarted for your planet-burning lung-destroying fossil fuels? Bad idea, it turns out.

    1. Mr .T

Relying on our own gas and oil fields is also a bad idea according to one minister Ryan.
Here in little old Ireland we are reliant on UK and Norwegian gas, however when contracts run out and need renewed, all of Europe will be clamoring to get Norwegian gas instead of Russian. Little old ireland could be left in the lurch on that

      1. SOQ

Poland: Omg Russia just turned our gas off

Russia: No, it’s literally still on and running, you just have to pay in rubles from now on

Poland: So basically you’ve turned it off

        1. scottser

do you have a vested interest in seeing russia become more powerful at europe’s expense?

        2. Kin

And here in the west we think Russia gives a poo about supply in the west
We have upset them on sanctions so they will give us the two fingers
They have nothing to gain playing ball
All that gas and oil is now heading east and to other nations at a better price than the west is looking for
          They are quids in
We meanwhile are all being gouged and governments are just backing the gougers

      2. Nigel

It’s a terrible idea to go developing fossil fuels when we need to be developing renewables. It’s like trying to put out a fire with petrol.

        1. Termagant

Do you know what happens when a carbon fibre turbine foil reaches the end of its 25 year lifespan
They bury it in the ground Nige
          not even particularly deep

        2. K. Cavan

The only meaningful contribution “Renewables” make is through wood-burning. Solar & Wind are a joke, they’re never going to contribute more than 10% of our needs & that will entail covering acres of our countryside with solar panels & replacing them every 25 years, at best & throwing the acres of old panels into landfill, as they can’t be recycled. Luckily for them, the people who make solar panels don’t give a damn about any of that.
We also have enough Cadmium to replace every car on the planet with electric models, then, we’ll have none. Building one electric car involves digging up half a million pounds of the earth, to refine.
According to the Climate Chicken Licken brigade, by 2022 Britain will be experiencing “Siberian weather conditions” & several European cities will be flooded regularly.
          It was in The Guardian.
          Late 2022, maybe?

Expecting Green Energy to keep us alive is like trying to start a fire by throwing water on it, Nigel.
It’s a Con, not an answer.

          1. Nigel

Expecting fossil fuels to keep us alive is like drinking a glass of water then jumping in a furnace.

        4. Kin

Where were you in the 1970s when we were told about alternative energy
Please the narrative Nigel has been rotting since then
In the 1960s they were showing movies about the environmental catastrophe awaiting

Sadly we have missed the boat
Ever heard of earth overshoot day
Just to educate you about it Nigel oracle of everything
It’s the day the world uses up its budgeted resources for a whole year
Last year it was July 29th give or take a few days
So we used part of this years resources a good 5months of that chunk
A good war would sort it out to get rid of half the population
Fact is we do not possess those new energy and no matter how much our leaders gouge us for carbon taxes
Maybe stand out side your local supermarket with a placard citing your concerns
Because if we cannot even do the simplest thing like a ban on plastic packaging
Honestly we have no chance of doing anything
Just tax the life out of the citizen

Is there anything to be said for sending out the lads in the fishing boats again?

While Russia is pure evil the Climate must come first, therefore we have no choice but to deal with them.

    1. Clampers Outside

      Such a load of poo.

From one side of the EUs mouth – “Oh look we’re Green, we don’t produce our own gas”

To the other side of the EUs mouth – “You want us to pay you what, for your dirty gas? “.

It’s a mess of the EUs own making. Let’s all be honest about that.

      With exception…
Be like France! Build more nuclear plants!

      1. Junkface

        +1 Clampers

Germany was the worst offender. Shutting down their Nuclear plants based on false information from their Green party and other environmentalists. Making themselves reliant on Russia to function. Its was idiotic bordering on backwards. An economy the size of Germany’s cannot function reliably without Nuclear power. And they still have a coal burning plant in the south! So f-ing dumb.

Germany & Netherlands roll out gas drilling plans

The hitherto untapped gas field lies 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, near the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog and the German island of Borkum and under the seabed of both countries.

    https://fargowells.com/germany-netherlands-roll-out-gas-drilling-plans/

Officials say the need for non-Russian gas outweighs the “minimal” impact on wildlife near the UNESCO world heritage site

So much waffling here about secret global elites controlling our lives and corrupting our governments, while immense and destructive power of the fossil fuel industry is demonstrated daily.

        1. Ten Pin's Fictitious Mrs.

I believe he is saying the bad guys have been right under your nose all along but you while away your days on sites for the demented disseminator, pointing fingers and looking under rocks for the ‘real’ bogey men.

          1. E'Matty

Exactly the same power interests involved. You clearly have little understanding of the power of the old Big Oil families and power centres.

        1. E'Matty

Exactly Gavin. The old Big Oil families and power interests sit at the top table in terms of global power, though are not on their own. So, the Rockefellers, British and Dutch Royals are major players in the global elite circles. They are joined by the likes of the Saudi Royals though Aramco was originally founded by the Standard Oil Co. of California (Chevron) in 1933, and do is a Rockefeller company in origin too, as are Exxon, Chevron, Mobil, Amoco etc..

The same interests dominate the global environmental and climate change movements. Indeed, the Rockefellers are also major players in the arena of global health too.

          1. bisted

…haw haw…except when sleepy Joe comes to the rescue of Europe with his fracked stuff…

          2. E'Matty

On that we agree Nigel. I have explained numerous times why that particular group (also players in the pharmaceutical industry, which is heavily linked to the petrochemical industry) are key players in a global power structure dominated by financial interests. It is this kind of financial power political power is subservient to.

      1. K. Cavan

When do you think the Global Elites who control our lives went undercover, Nigel & why? Are they afraid of someone?

  5. stephen moran

Bulgaria had already announced it backup plan – it wasn’t going to renew a long-term natural gas supply contract with Russia that runs out this year. Deputy PM Assen Vassilev already stated a month ago that the country will instead import Azeri gas through the TANAP pipeline and its IGB offshoot from Greece, which is almost completed.

That’s the trouble with authoritarian dictatorships – in their idiocy never afford the other guy an agency – they think the game is frozen at the get go and the opposition is static and doesn’t get to dynamically move their pieces, innovate tactically and form fresh alliances. Its hard at this juncture not to conclude that Putin and his cabal are actually as thick as shite.
