My favourite memory of Smithfield is walking across it last year and chancing upon a used tampon on the cobblestones.
Fun times.

Wasn’t quite as bad as it looks in the top picture. It was scruffy alright, but there was a vibrant market in the square most days. The aul potted geraniums were for sale all over the shop. People loved geraniums back then.

I grew up on Blackhorse Avenue, and moved back into the area last year – the level of change in my own lifetime is amazing. There’s a photo taken from a helicopter for the 1988 celebration in the Little Museum on Stephen’s Green, and you can clearly see so much of the old wasteland and the warehouses in Smithfield.
What this country can achieve in 30 odd years!!!
