    Alcohol is a massive factor in rape, both for the victim and the rapist. While the victim of rape is always in the right, taking steps to reduce risk, such as not getting leglessly drunk, is only sensible.

      It always bothers me that people think that preaching about personal safety is not a separate issue completely to victim blaming.

        Well, if my car was broken into, it really isn’t my fault. But if I left my camera on the front seat, its still not my fault but that’s pretty unwise. It’s a legitimate observation. It doesn’t make the thief less culpable.
        I’ve done a lot of formal academic study on the issue and related issues, probably more than most commenters here. Its a sensitive topic obviously but cheap shots and psudo-PC posturing don’t help.

            my point is the same people complain about women getting drunk are the same ones that will claim she was asking for it for wearing a short skirt.

            It doesn’t matter what the woman did, they will find a way to impart some of the blame on her.

            Agreed. And saying there’s something people can do to stop it always implies they had some hand in setting up a “rape friendly” situation which is simply untrue. Whether the comment is academic or “sensible” doesn’t matter a toss when every person who says such things reinforces the considerations judges and juries take into account when these cases come to court.

            Whens the last time you heard about an arsonist getting off because the owner of the property had matches by the front door?

        Better to do that than give out higher custodial sentances for rapists.
        Better do that than eradicate the culture of rape acceptance that is creeping into our society.
        Better do that than get the message out these that those who rape should be treated as a social pariah for the rest of their days.

        What do you do when people take all manners of precautions against rape but still rape happens in our society? What then?

        Will you see then that being raped is not a matter of how you dress, act, behave or your state of sobriety? Will you see then that rape is a much more incideous evil that does not respect measures taken on a personal level to counteract it?

        What do you say to children who are raped? Should have been more careful of your personal safety?
        What would you say to the woman dragged off the street and raped? Don’t go out after dark love?
        What would you say to the entire communities of women and children in Pitcairn Island? Should have moved somewhere else darlings?

        The message first and foremost has to be “Don’t rape” not “change your behaviour so you don’t get raped” That is one step away from implying that the victim was complicit in the crime commited against them.

    In fairness, one does have to look on and say – Gay Propaganda is quite rampant in the global western media over the last couple of years…which does raise a point when does being gay cease being a preference and instead become a religion of sorts?
