Further to Saturday’s Irish rugby victory over South Africa.
Terry Pattison writes:
When Conor Murray picked up the ball to kick for Tommy Bowe, where was [South Africa star winger Bryan Habana? He was standing in the middle of the pitch, exactly opposite Murray, having drifted in and abandoned marking his opposite number – a cardinal sin for an experienced international winger, I would have thought. But not one commentator or match report had any criticism for the famous man! He may be fast, but nobody can leave Tommy that much space…
RUCK!
Meanwhile…

Its about ethics in sports media.
Sky Sports commentators in England (not sure of the names) pointed it out in the in-match analysis.
Conor o’shea and g hook referred to it during post match discussion. Might be on rte player
They mentioned it repeatedly on RTE one after the match, did a whole bit on it with video analysis on it and all, a training ground move Schmidt came up with apparently as Habana is know for doin it.
But good work spotting it yourself son.
Ya, Gerry Thornley pointed it out but on the Times and with the Second Captains yesterday. He seemed sure it was a training ground move between Murray and Bowe who ‘intentionally stayed wide when Habana got sucked in’. [ <– paraphrased]
What are we getting at here anyway? Habana has the pace to cover larger areas normally.
don’t know where that ‘but’ came from (common complaint) in the first line there.
Wut?
Eh, it was pointed out by plenty of times of how Habanna was at fault and that the Ireland obviously done their homework on him as they identified his tendency to float in towards the ruck.
What an absurd claim, “But not one commentator or match report had any criticism for the famous man!”.
In an interview on Friday RO’G mentioned that Habana had a habit of drifting infield and Schmidt was likely to target that. The move was clearly designed for this as Sexton’s half break drew Habana in, so Murray could chip to the corner with no defender covering.
Leave the rugby analysis to the professionals lads…
Who is Terry Pattison and where did he write this?
Every radio/tv report and most of the articles I’ve read pointed out this passage of play and Habana’s role in it. C’mon Broadsheet! Terry is Habana Laugh himself.
What are his thoughts on gay marriage?
Reminds me of the Thierry Henry handball incident. Not one commentator or match report had any criticism for the famous man
Jayzis Tommy luv, gerrup, heya now.
Tommy Bower. Looks like a handsome man trapped in a funhouse mirror.
Pointed out a billion times you mug.
Was a tough spot for Habana regardless.
Either take this down or check the facts before posting, yeah?
Embarrassing rubbish.
They mentioned it eighteen times in the English coverage, once to live piano accompaniment from Elton John. Tom McGurk and Roseanne Davidson re-enacted it on Newsround, and it was the centre-piece of the first Irish Times pop-up page since the Zapruder footage came out. Gulls now mimic it. Sharon Ní Bheoláin tattooed a three-paragraph analysis across the small of her back, Bryan Dobson has changed his name by deed-poll to Bryan “Habana drifts in and abandons his marking” Dobson, and Twink is working on a musical of it for the Gate. But apart from that, you’re right. Nary a reference.
Saw it on a news ticker in Times Square.
Or Times Beyond Number When Habana Has Drifted With Disastrous Consequences Square, as it’s now known.
lol +11
They’re bringing Voyager back to include it on the tape of songs transmitting to prospective extra terrestrial listening devices, it’ll go out after Johnny B. Goode and before New Guinea, men’s house song.
been busy all day, chose this post to read comments. Glad i did. great stuff lads :)
I’d say Terry Pattison thought this might go a bit better for him….
Instead……

But still, it was funny how BS offered Terry up for a good group head-kicking. Rugby lolzzzz.
Will broadsheet literally publish any article a reader sends in?
Never push any of mine. I think they don’t like me.
Sorry Munkfisht. We’re very fond of you.
Good man Terry, keep the chin up!!
Jesus, this was repeatedly mentioned. You idiots. What, you think it’s some sort of conspiracy? Stick to the blogging
More to the point, they should put those guns away and stop making the rest of us feel in adequate. Not as if it’s August or anything!
Jaysus Tommy’s a fine lookin man! – which was actually left out of the commentary!
So who won?
When I see Brian Habana on the pitch, I like to sing “What would Brian Habana Do” a la Southpark. In this case the answer is drift and allow a try.
Thanks for the pics of hot rugby players though.
Is this a new BS rule where any particularly inane post comes with at least 3 pictures of Tommy Bowe to appease us? ‘Cause I’m feeling pretty appeased, if you know what I mean. (And I really don’t know how you couldn’t)
Daft. It was specifically pointed out by every commenter on the RTE panel and in every post match analysis I read. It’s a common error made by him that Schmidt was ready for.
Swoon – real men! Not Broadsheet pinko leftie liberal beta types.
Goddamit ABM, you’re right!
I would never have copped it if you hadn’t pointed it out so clearly.
How about me and you meet up behind some sheds of your choosing and suck each other off into oblivion?
You know you want it.
BTW, I’m straight, but I’m willing to take one for the team.
I don’t understand anything that was posted here.
