Out of work mapper Omar Sarhan writes:
A few days since I sent you anything, I was just looking at OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] data related to the amount of homework and study students do. I created this map (above). You can get to an interactive version of the map here. Or engage via Tumblr…

I knew it!
am I reading this right? Is economic prosperity inversely proportionate to amount of homework?
Educational achievement, it seems, too – Spain and Italy are significantly behind their northern EU counterparts in terms of competences, but look how much homework they get.
It looks that way to me. I see Finland has amongst the lowest time spent doing homework, with a reputation for having one of the best education systems.
Yes, that’s what I was going to say! First country I checked after Ireland was Finland.
Me too
No. I think you’re seeing a false correlation. I would say it is more quality V quantity. 1 hour of quality study is worth 10 hours of poorly thought out repetitive exercises.
Btw Omar, your maps are getting better by the week
Thanks man, I partly did this one as I wanted to craft my own background map using MapBox Studio.
I wonder what correlation there is to the time spent in school. As far as I know, Ireland would also have one of the lowest in europe, when school holidays are taken into account. Maybe that explains the larger amounts of homework making up for actual school time
Suggesting an additional layer of school years (or student ages) plus number of subjects.
+1
Still, a great job
I’ll see if I can find the data.
Hey man,
So I dug up a 2014 OECD report on total compulsory school hours (Primary & Secondary) and added it to the tooltip, It’s not exactly a full data set and there is missing data, but you may like it.
Am I right in reading that South Korean students are in the least amount of study category? If so then I think the OECD stats are broke!
Just got horrible flashbacks to being crippled in my room with 6+ hours of homework a night in 6th year.
UGH
My kids keep telling me they don’t need any help with their homework, so I just go back to the pub.*
