Áras an Chontae, Castlebar, Co Mayo on Monday

Anton McNulty, of Mayo News, writes:

The two males had been sitting in the public gallery of the chamber of Mayo County Council during a meeting of the Council, which was adjourned early to facilitate a civic reception for the US Ambassador to Ireland, Kevin O’Malley.”

Before the arrival of the ambassador, one of the men was heard talking loudly to other people in the public gallery. He was approached by up to four gardaí, who asked him to leave the chamber, explaining that the civic reception was an invitation-only event.”

“Two other men were also spoken to and asked to leave the chamber. One was threatened with arrest before he eventually left but the other man refused and was also carried from the chamber.”

For real ? The details are in that short paragraph and that’s what you come up with ?

      1. Mr. T.

I also read the news article.

He was arrested for having an opinion. Dear Enda didn’t want the Ambassador of our REAL rulers embarrassed by real democracy in action.

        Don’t be so compliant.

        1. Odis

So gate crashing an invitation only event, presumably to behave badly, constitutes “real democracy in action” – I always thought that was something to do with the notion of one person one vote.

          1. Rob_G

Some people have a problem with the current Govt (which is fair enough), but they then often end up voicing support for very ill-defined or silly causes for the sole reason that they are ‘anti-establishment’ in some nebulous way.

          2. Kieran NYC

I’m just saying it’s a standard M.O. – hate the government and jump on any bandwagon you can to bash them, even if it’s completely unrelated or if you agree/disagree with the underlying issue by itself.

I was expanding on Rob_G’s point.

  1. Dubloony

Gobshite refuses to leave premises where invitation only event is taking place, after being asked to do so. Refuses, and is carried outside.

    What is the actual problem?
US ambassadors tend to be a bit security conscious these days.

Or is this being interpreted as citizen being put down by the man, or something?

    1. Mr. T.

Other non-invited people there were not asked to leave. He was because he was involved in recent entirely peaceful protests outside the courthouse regarding repossessions. Can’t have Enda exposed to his public.

      1. Bluebeard

He was invited to leave because he was a toss pot. He should try job bridge and better himself.

        1. Odis

I’d say he is to old. Job-bridge is an opportunity for occupational enrichment, that’s only open to young people, so I understand.

          1. Odis

Oh come on now Mr. T. I think the guards showed very reasonable restraint in dealing with this in-bred culchie clown.

Ok, from my post below you can see that I have special ire towards anti-fluoridation, but that article stinks of character assassination.

Why the f**k would a paper be concerned about the marital relations of a small time drug user/dealer. He’s hardly John Gilligan.

    2. Odis

Wonder what the grinder was for. Cutting the resin with briquette dust or something underhand like that?

The Blueshirt militia continue to act with no verifiable authority or lawful purpose.

They’re a disgrace to the costume.

There’s probably no doubt that the guy’s a professional asshat, but if it’s the case that the gig was ‘invite only’ but others, who weren’t invited, weren’t asked to leave, then there’s a problem.

Either all the non-invitees get skied out, or none do. Otherwise, the optics are – tosspot or not – ‘we don’t want you in here embarassing us’ and frankly that *isn’t* a good enough reason to ask somebody to leave a public gallery (loud talking or not) and certainly isn’t a good enough reason to manhandle them. Upon what basis was he asked to leave, and upon what basis did the Gardai (it would appear) decide not to ask other uninvited folk to leave.

NB – i’m only going on What MrT says there “Other non-invited people there were not asked to leave”

    1. Bork

I see where you’re coming from but it’s not a council meeting so the public gallery wasn’t in use for it’s intended purpose.

It’s a bit more like the situation you’d find in a pub ‘management reserve the right to refuse admission etc etc.’

  4. Murtles

S’pose it’s better to be carried out instead of getting 8 bullets in your back. Our guards are awful rough compared to other countries who are always tolerant of uninvited rowdy guests brushing shoulders with other country’s ambassadors.

  5. Jones

Wow he talks some nonsense. I like how the Guard calmly dumbed down the situation for him with the wedding example and he still didn’t get it.

    “What Act?” LOL

  6. Owen

This is hilarious!! Why does everyone feel they have new rights just cause it is being recorded? Just like the IW gang yesterday. Camera roles, dig your heels in, question totally unrelated events and then claim they were mistreated.

He is lucky they didn’t smash a glass door over his heat…. . or that the Ambassadors police didnt put 8 warning shots in his back.

  7. newsjustin

I have a little sympathy for the guys – if was planned badly – since the actual work of the council had to be adjourned early to host the welcome for the Ambassador. The lads were already in-situ waiting for the fluoridation item to come up on the agenda. I’m not surprised they were upset when they learned it wouldn’t be discussed.

In saying that, they are clearly out to stir hassle rather than cooperate. But the event seemed badly planned.

    1. Mr. T.

Or roughly translated as I oppose protest in any event because I want an authoritarian state run by corporate interests for the enrichment of the few at the expense of functioning democracy and civil rights.

  8. Someone

Ok, you should have notified us that the video was posted by anti-fluoridation whackos before we added to the viewing figures on Youtube and gave them more credit (a lot more credit) than these clowns deserve.

No sympathy for these idiots, they are up there with Scientologists, Climate Change deniers, Ant-vaxers and chelation treatment advocates. In other words, f***ing quacks.

  9. Jim bob

“dem people up on their piddlestools ”

Civic reception buddy, if it was in the Aras you wouldn’t be allowed attend either, Piddle off. I’m not the biggest fan of the Gards at times but these lads seemed reasonable.

  10. Paul

I’m happy to pay for my fluoridated water now after watching those fool protestors in action.
