Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan (second from the left) speaking at An Garda Síochána’s five-year modernisation and renewal programme today
“Today is the start of an intense period of change and growth for An Garda Síochána. This new programme of renewal and modernisation will put victims of crime at the heart of all that we do.”
“Crime prevention will become our number one policing priority and we will provide the support necessary so that our proud force can efficiently do its work.”
“We have listened and learned and this new programme that we are announcing today will make a real difference where it matters – in communities right round this country.”
“The next five years will see An Garda Síochána become a 21st Century police and security service the people of our country can be proud of and our people can be proud to serve in.”

Meanwhile, at yesterday’s passing out ceremony in Templemore…
Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald with Garda Commissioner Nóirin O’Sullivan and her son probationary Garda Ciaran McGowan and husband, Jim McGowan, who was recently promoted to Chief Superintendent.
Also…

Will this be met with optimism or negativity?
Cynicism
Hilarity – I will believe it when I see it.
Except when that victim was Mary Boyle…
“Crime prevention will become our number one policing priority…” – So, preventing crime wasn’t our national police force’s number one policing priority before now.
To be fair, it could mean that they were prioritising investigation of crimes that have been committed as opposed to prevention.
O’Sullivan needs to go. As does her husband. And the gardai who perjured themselves need to be charged. And Martin Callanan needs to be charged with defaming MacCabe.
Jesus lads, ye could start but modernizing the Garda website. It looks like it was made as a Junior Cert project.
I’d prefer if they modernized PULSE first.
She is still there? Ok then nothing has nor will change. All, resume normal activity, nothing to see here.
‘We Have Listened And Learned’. Now how about a photo op with a tax dodging TD who can’t complete his register of interests correctly.
Culture is rotten & will not be remedied over 5 years. It requires a clean out of all the top brass who are now intent on changing a culture which the stood over for many years. Farcical stuff.
The commissioner should have been brought in from outside the force and given the support of the government to make the necessary changes. Applications were received from highly qualified people from various police forces around the world, yet the job went to an insider who has spent her entire working life (all 35 years of it) with the Guards.
I admire the fact that she worked her way up the ranks in a male dominated world, but she’s the wrong choice in an organisation perceived by most citizens and corrupt and self serving.
Lowry – wearing cufflinks not bracelets.
Codswallop.
Ah the passing out parade, why were 150 paraded, when only 75 had only
completed the course, the remaining 75 would only be finished their course
in 6 weeks time, the excuse given was that the Minister would be on holidays
and could not attend….is Frances Fitzgerald for the high jump and will she
take Noirin and the rest of crew with her…..has no one either in Fine Gael or
their political life support friends in Fianna Fail the guts to take on Noirin and
her brass neck colleague’s and fire them once and for all.
Her son will go far I suspect
