Drugs:
On the topic of drugs, Murphy openly admits having inhaled marijuana a few times and says she’s in favour of looking at evidence that supports decriminalisation. She also favours for the introduction of injection centres and making marijuana available for medicinal purposes….
Abortion:
Describing herself as pro-choice, Murphy has words about the Eighth Amendment, saying that kicking the issue to the Citizens Assembly is a form of political cowardice. “You know, we do have a Citizen’s Assembly,” she says. “It’s called the Dáil. Ideally, I’d like to have seen that approach. The Citizen’s Assembly should be removed from the constitution.”
Voluntary celibacy:
One issue Catherine is passionate about is the housing crisis and homelessness. Asked, hypothetically speaking, if she could solve this crisis tomorrow – on the one condition that she’d have to give up sex – she readily agrees to such a deal.
Homelessness:
“I’d almost give up anything to sort the housing crisis because I see people here every day of the week. If there was something you could actually personally sacrifice to resolve that problem, there would be very little that you wouldn’t do, to sort that housing and homeless crisis. It’s the tragedy of our time.
“But I would do way beyond that. There’s lots I’d give up to sort that crisis out.”

If cannabis oil cured cancer (and while preclinical research has shown encouraging results in mice and petri dishes the simple truth is that it doesn’t) then “big pharma” would be milking it for every last cent.

Maybe open your eyes to scientfic research, not Daily Mail miracle stories. If cannabis oil cured cancer then big pharma would be selling it to cancer patients. As it stands there are many types of cancer so, while cannabis oil may help fight some forms (though that has yet to be shown by any actual research) of cancer there is no way of knowing what forms and in what doses so Facebook post generalisations are meaningless. Chemo is proven to work. Cannabis oil, since it has been shown to fight cancer cells in mice, has a slightly stronger claim to be a cure than praying to Mother Teresa.

Thanks Bertie, although that’s quite depressing… Not sure it’s exactly fair to call a potential cure ‘a fairytale’ and ‘the new homeopathy’ BEFORE any actual research has been carried out on humans though, especially as its been shown to work in some cases in mice as you point out. Might a more open/optimistic/impatient mindset be more helpful?
I’m all on for research and would obviously love for this to be a cure. I’m also 100% in favour of legalisation fow what it’s worth.
My negativity around this is purely directed at those who claim it’s a miracle cure being suppressed by big pharma. They’re selling false hope to the desperate and are no better than those promoting homeopathy, angel cures and holy water.
Looking at this from a purely cold, hard-nosed business perspective (of which I’ve found myself frighteningly capable on occasion) if Mr & Mrs Human Nature had:
Option 1 – sell the entire planet’s cancer patients a relatively low cost Product A which cured everyone in 6-12 months
Or
Option 2 – sell the entire planet’s cancer patients the far more expensive Products B-Z for years upon years, but with poorer results
Is it right to assume that of course Option 1 would be seized upon?
Next question is who has the means to enact trials on humans and why haven’t they? The illegality of the plant is the usual line trotted out but that hardly holds water anymore considering half of the US allows it for medicinal use, and for some time now.
I completely agree you that selling false hope is despicable but I don’t think that’s what Biggins is at, it’s not like he put up a link to his site on the dark web or anything…
So anyway, carry out the feckin trials and put this bloody conversation to bed once and for all would be my stance

Biggins, I’m not against the research of cannabis oil as treatment for cancer (or a host of other diseases and conditions). The demonisation of cannabis has prevented a lot of research into a substance that likely has a host of medical uses; I’m all for extensive research into those uses and benefits. Already, there is growing positive research emerging with some encouraging results.
But the fact is, there is long-established science and research behind the effects of chemotherapy. There was no science behind the belief that the world was flat so that comparison doesn’t hold water. Chemotherapy’s efficacy has been proven. And, right now, along with lumpectomies or other surgical procedures, it is the best treatment we have for cancer. My mother, my aunt, and many other people I know would not be here were it not for chemotherapy, no matter how flippantly you might dismiss its use.
Saying that “chemo kills” is dangerous. Chemo saves lives. If you want to ignore the science and the track record of chemotherapy, you’re within your rights to, but don’t spread dangerous misinformation. That doesn’t strengthen your argument for research into cannabis oil; it has the effect of making people write you off as anti-science or conspiracy led.
