Attending RTÉ’s Late Late Show in September 1998, I received a “one for everyone in the audience” prize of a long-life bulb. I placed it in the utility room and despite being used every day since (many times it was left on overnight), it still works. Is this a record?

    Nope. My dad’s aunt, who’s pushing on 90 or so, has had the same Philips bulb in her front bathroom for 60 years or so, and it still works. Philips have expressed an interest in putting the bulb in a cabinet in their HQ if she was to ever wish to change it/sell the house (she is too scared to simply give it to them in case no replacement bulb was to ever work again!)

    You’ll have an interview with Michael on the radio with Darcy, a guest appearance of the bulb on the Late Late and Dermot Bannon will manage to get some RTE clicks out of it since he’s never out of the media these days. It’s the RTE gift that keeps on giving.

    I would say that a lightbulb in a utility room would only be on for a few minutes a day generally, so while the longevity of the bulb is impressive, it probably isn’t an amazing feat.

      It’s actually turning on and off (heading and cooling) that does a lot of damage. That and any vibrations while it is on.

    Speaking of bulbs, I got the wife a birthday present of a new bulb for the fridge.

    When she opened the door, you should have seen her face light up…

    Aren’t light bulbs built specifically to be non-permanent. This might actually be considered a faulty one
