Vacant Stand-Off

at

This morning/afternoon.

North frederick Street, Dublin

Protesters who have occupied a building at 34 North Frederick Street disobey a court to leave the house. The housing groups have occupied the property to protest against the national housing crisis.

They were given until 2pm to vacate the premises.

More as we get it.

I don’t want to sound overly critical but why did these occupying protesters go for the really expensive properties. http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/mediamaster-s3eu/25fea11f834eaffe2c5087d7f3f1a5e3

Do they expect the taxpayer to buy them? Any chance of them occupying a more affordable house in the middle of Tallaght for example?
Like I mean it’s in a prime city centre location. Most people in decent employment would struggle to buy service and live in that area.
I appreciate the sentiment behind all this would occupying prime city centre locations and claiming to be for the working man is a joke.

“Protesters … Like I mean it’s in a prime city centre location” I think you probably have your answer there. They’re much more likely to draw attention in a prime location than a small suburban place.
Also why should’t working folk be allowed property in the city centre? It shouldn’t be reserved for the rich!

Working folk (along with everybody else I might add) can buy or rent property anywhere they want. But they should be able to be self-sufficient. It’s simple economics. The same thing has happened in developed cities all over the world.
Back Wards thinking social planners have exacerbated the problem by making the country a very globalised economy. Reasonably well-paid tech workers from overseas et cetera tend to drive up the prices in these areas and drive about the working classes.

Tech workers are not that well paid, at least not paid enough to be able to buy in the city centre. They rent because like the rest they have no choice. The argument that they are somehow buying up these apartments is wrong.

There is something else going on and I expect it is to do with international pension funds. But, the problem with them is that as soon as somewhere else guarantees a better return on investments they will move, just like the tech companies.

In the meantime these guys are naming and shaming the hoarders. Fair play to them.
