The Department of Education has ordered an examination of 42 schools built by Tyrone-based Western Building Systems in the past ten years after “significant structural issues” were recently identified at a north Dublin school.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that hospital units built by Tyrone-based construction company Western Building Systems (WBS) are being examined to make sure that they are structurally sound.
He said that initial indications from Beaumont Hospital and some of the health buildings is that the units are not affected by structural problems which were discovered in school buildings built by WBS.
The HSE has said it is working to establish a list of any health facilities it may have engaged WBS to construct.
The company website lists a number of facilities at Beaumont, St Finbarr’s in Cork, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.

How did a company with past safety issues get awarded so many contracts? Who awarded them and what are the connections? This is Ireland cronyism alive and well regardless of incompetence!
The ‘fast track’s system meant that the builders themselves were the quality control with little to no outside/independent inspections… or so I understand from Drivetime yesterday.
What that means is, for example, if you as an individual got some work done at home, the onus would be on you, the home owner, to see that the work would be done properly.
In this case, the “home owner” was the dept of education, who apparently/demonstrably did no inspection at all….
Nuts! Bananas! Dangerous and wasteful…

The “fast-track” bit makes no difference, there’s effectively no control on this stuff anyway.
You may well ask. And also ask why Carillion were awarded the contract to build more schools when they were in severe financial difficulties. No due diligence.

This fast track accusation is a nonsense. The fact are that the bids go to the lowest bidder, who are then asked to reduce their bid even more. Clearly the builder cut corners thereafter, and there has nobody from the employers side i.e. the Dept to check up on the build quality. The Civil Service do not have the skills to oversee any build program. The same goes for local authorities, and thus the reluctance to trust them with soical housing provision.
