Drawing A Veil

at

This morning.

Hilton Hotel, Charlemont Place, Dublin 2.

Shamelessly bare-headed First Lady Sabina Higgins joins an International Women’s Day breakfast hosted by the Muslim Sisters of Éire, including from left (top row) Sabina Syed, Chair Lorraine O’Connor and Aisha Al, all dressed in hijabs to maintain modesty and privacy from ‘unrelated males’.

As they are perfectly entitled to do.

I see your point, but these women (presumably) are wearing what they feel comfortable in and surely International Womens Day is the very day they should feel free to do this.

Can women who choose to wear the hijab not support the rights of women who choose not to wear the hijab? If the issue is ‘not policing what women choose to wear,’ that is

In fact, Bodger more women worldwide wear a head covering of some sort than do not. So, why single out the hijab?

          4. Bodger

In Iran for instance women have been imprisoned for not wearing a hijab. I can think of no other garment, burka aside, where this would be the case. Genuinely not wishing to make any racial or religious point only an observation it appears to conflict with the spirit of international women’s day.

You’d criticise a woman for exercising her right to choose because that same right is denied elsewhere?

          6. Bodger

I understood the hijab is a symbol of male repression to many Muslim women. I personally do not care what anyone wears, with the possible exception of white robes and/or shirts made of cheesecloth.

It’s a patriarchal religion, like Christianity. People brought up within its beliefs have to reconcile their faith with their political activism and feminism, just as many Christian women did and do. That’s their dilemma to resolve or make peace with, don’t you think? Every single one of us has similar dilemmas of our own, just as vulnerable to empty snark. Women who go to church every week voted for abortion. Kids strike for action on climate change after being driven to school in cars. We’re all using electronic devices that depended on slave child labour in their production. We’re all compromised in some way.

Bodger, you were doing ok until you made this frankly unnecessary comment about cheesecloth shirts….I demand a retraction!

…what do you think if a couple of the Sisters of Mercy had crept out without their wimples Bodger?

don’t mind that. the real offense here is the which-fragment as an incomplete sentence. stop it.

apologies, bodger. it was a long weekend. which has left me emotional and tetchy.
