Meanwhile…
The decision of Tourism Ireland and Bord Fáilte to suspend promotion of Ireland’s greyhound racing has provoked “fury” amongst dog owners and fans of the sport, the head of the industry has declared.
The suspension decision, pressed by Minister for Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, follows directly on from RTÉ’s undercover Running For Their Lives documentary into greyhound racing earlier this year, the chief executive of the Irish Greyhound Board Gerard Dollard said.
The documentary reported that 6,000 greyhounds are put down in Ireland every year.
The reaction of the greyhound industry to the decision was one of fury, Mr Dollard said.

the fact hare coursing is legal here means it will be a cold day in hell before they ban greyhound racing.
The sheer amount of scumbags in Ireland keep these “sports” going unfortunately.
Delighted that Shane Ross has amazed by implementing a policy I actually agree with.
Why on earth are we handing over taxpayers money to a semi-state body in this country for greyhound racing? It is beyond bizarre. Talk about historical anachronisms.
it’s a fraction of what horse racing receives (also a disgrace).
funding of the gambling industry is a disgrace, it’s a shocking waste if money
+1 – I can only guess some cute hoor worked it out that if they give to the equestrian set there might be a pot of gravy for the greyhound racing that can be misappropriated for a decade or two. Harolds Cross was sold for 20 odd million, to another gov dept for a vastly inflated sum, was that deal ever investigated and was Bord na Gcons mismanagement of its affairs to the tune of , you guessed it, 20 odd million, ever investigated. How do the books at Bord na Gcon look these days, all in the black yes?
For those of u who had a full Irish breakfast yesterday, what condition were the pigs kept in before they met their doomed fate. Why do dogs deserve a life of privilege. Welcome to the real world dogs.
+1
You’re not wrong – people’s cognitive dissonance is huge when it comes to the treatment of different animals.
Well, we should be glad that they are getting ‘woke’ over dogs, elephants, penguins and polar bears, at the very least.
So, I like steak, therefore I have no right to give about the treatment of greyhounds, hare coursing and other barbaric sports?
Its kinda like saying in the 1860’s in America, ‘you wear cotton shirts and eat sugar, therefore you have no right to give out about slavery’
people’s cognitive dissonance is huge when it comes to the treatment of different animals.
people’s cognitive dissonance is huge when it comes to the treatment of animals full stop.

A farmer isn’t going to starve his pigs or train them to rip hares apart.
But people don’t eat the slaughtered greyhounds. The ears are chopped off and the body thrown into an unmarked hole dug illegally. For that argument to work the meat should at least be made into “slow dog” burgers. Meat is meat, or so the carnists say.
I agree, get that feckin’ labrador into the pot – QUICK!
I am talking about the condition the animals are kept in. Besides, I do eat dog. Have u ever tried golden retriever. Its flippin delicious.
Woof woof..
That embarrassing greyhound racing Christmas party ad disappeared quickly too. It encouraged people to watch dogs racing while having a few nibbles and 10% of your ticket price would go to charity.
Why is RTE 2 broadcasting an hour of greyhound racing during prime time once a week? Especially after the RTE expose of the industry? Is RTE getting the programming for free? Is RTE being paid to broadcast it (by the industry, betting business?) . It looks quite bizarre on the RTE 2 schedule at 9pm.
it’s not provoked fury with this greyhound owner, a happy house horse who runs only for fun in a safe area.
