Compressed carbon, one of the most plentiful elements in existence compressed into a lovely shape and dug out of the ground in horrific circumstances can be made much more easily in a lab and are pretty much identical to real ones.
There really is no need to be digging up the guts of the earth for them, there is even less reason to be risking peoples health and mental wellbeing to do so.
