They took over East Jerusalem from the Jordanians who, as the Arab Legion , took it over in 1948, expelled all the Jews, destroyed about 50 synagogues and looted the place. The Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah agreed to pay rent to the Jews who took their property back in 1967. Naturally they didn’t. Hence the court cases. Hence riots.
