one step at a time. get them out of their big metal cars and onto scooters first. cycling to come later.

cycling is too efficent, so doest really burn many calories anyway.

Nonsense. Cycle to in and out to work from the burbs every day and watch belly fat melt, thighs and bum harden and general cardio vascular fitness increase enormously.

The report also stated that none of the injuries would have been prevented by helmets. They were injuries to arms, wrists, legs etc – the way you’d put out your arm to break your fall if the scooter hit a shore or something. The media – and Broadsheet – however, preferred the clickbaity headlines.

      This.

Same could be said for cyclists too – plenty dont wear helmets, but most of the injuries received would not be prevented by helmets.

Cycling helmets aren’t very good at preventing head injuries.

What they are good at is breaking apart during minor impacts.
This spectacular destruction gives the user the illusion that the impact was greater and thus ‘the helmet saved my life’ where in fact it did f*ck all.

I’ve heard there’s a school of thought that dismisses the effectiveness of cycling helmets.

I read the website report (hasn’t been updated largely since 2016) on Dutch cycling accidents which implies that the behaviour of cyclists in taking greater risks is because of the protection they perceive helmets provide them with. Likewise the article references competitive mountain biking which is a higher risk activity than commuting, for example, and carries a higher risk of incident. Nothing in the article discusses the level of injury that might have occurred had those injured not been wearing helmets.

Either way I choose to wear a helmet, I’ll peruse the other articles a little further out of interest. While the head is only one potential body part prone to injury I’d rather hit the tarmac with a good quality one on me bonce than without.

Helmets are compulsory for cycling in Australia. I wear one all the time because I know they work. I have seen people walk away from falls that would have been serious if they had no helmet on.

Only a matter of time before someone is killed by one of these e-projectiles on wheels

“were not wearing helmets for fear of looking like ninnies (no doubt).” but they’re riding an eScooter? Only bested by roller blades for dork points.
