    From the pen of the eccentric incurable romantic that is Jonathan Richman (minus the Modern Lovers here) comes an infectiously sunny ditty “That Summer Feeling”. It’s a sort of American Graffiti like pathos infused homage in song to memories of summers past filled with a mix of nostalgia & regret

    I recall seeing him in Whelan’s about a quarter century ago when a chap requested this classic cut & Richman started strumming the intro. The guy then shouted out could he wait until he got back from the jacks & Jonathan duly obliged & played ” I Was Dancin’ in a Lesbian Bar” while we awaited our hero’s return from his call of nature. “That summer feeling’s gonna haunt you the rest of your life…”

    Persisting with my penchant for Aussie bands, I really love this song from The Jezebels – “Endless Summer.”

    It reminds me of summer evening céilís in Carna in the late 80s/early 90s back when i’d be shipped off to the Gaeltacht for three glorious weeks of freedom. Oh the yearning infused glances across the wooden hall floor, desperately trying to pluck up the courage to talk to the object of my hormone infused desire.

    when i was 12 i went camping with my big brother and his mates on the dunes in portmarnock. there were illicit cigarettes, my first sip from a warm can of harp and observations on ladyparts that made no sense. there was a mission that morning to steal milk, juice and yoghurt from local doorsteps at 5am. there was unlicensed craic. the stereo played the who, the stones, the ramones, ac/dc and in particular, thin lizzy’s ‘live and dangerous’. and from that album the one song that captured the freedom, camaraderie and invincibility i felt that night was ‘the boys are back in town’. since then, it’s not summer until that album gets played in full, outdoors in the evening with beer in hand.

    This is a song with lyrics that reference summer rain, that most Irish of summer phenomena.

    Saw these boys at Oxegen 2003 during their brief window of success.

    Given That Summer Feelin’ was already listed, my song this week is actually two songs. A twofer so to speak…

    The band is XTC and their Slylarking album is a masterpiece of summer pop.

    The opening track is Summer’s Cauldron A short and breezy opener that gaplessly leads into Grass.

    Even today both songs and especially the lyrics of Grass evokes a strong emotion and the summer of ’84 and of me and my first girlfriend hanging out in Dodder Park and, well, learning to kiss :). Skylarking came out a couple of years later and when I heard it, even then, transported me back to that summer.

    I have plugged this band before and plugged the voice of Gay Woods before. They both combine to provide us with the purest example of 1980s Irish synth pop. A rare thing but what is rare is wonderful. Melting 99s , sunburn, etc.

    Summer Wine by Nancy & Lee is the perfect song. It’s got the boy/girl duet, a story that keeps you hanging till the end, the double meaning to the lyrics and all wrapped in a crackin tune with duelling Spanish guitars.

        ..this week was the 50th anniversary of the release of Joni’s Blue,the artists artist and one the greatest albums of all time.
        -an absolutely gorgeous cover of Join’s classic For Free by Lana Del Rey with Zella Day & Weyes Blood,from Chemtrails Over The Country Club.The song is about a New York sidewalk musician who plays the clarinet on the corner of 6th and 8th real good for free,or rent free:)

    On Thursday 24th June, from the bus I saw the biggest moon ever. On walking to my home, I was looking out for it again, looking up and about… a couple walking their dog approached me and asked me if I was lost, I said “No, I was looking for the moon”
    This song is lovely, the first full moon of summer.
