Lifting The Needle

at

The memories are golden.

After many great years and stacks of free vouchers, the good folk at Golden Discs have decided to depart sponsorship duties on our Friday music competition mainstay.

I think I speak for everyone when I say they it’s been a blast.

A big thank you to all at Golden Discs and Sinéad and everyone in Presence PR.

All outstanding winners will receive their vouchers this week.

Nick adds: May all your days be gold, my friend.

awwww, well it was gold while it lasted,
saw a better side to many commentators, felt I got to know some others a bit better, discovered loads of great tunes and I love the loudspeaker and headphones I was able to get with my wins !

    A weekly highlight indeed.

Thanks for your curation Nick, twas an enjoyable ride.

It’s definitely not because you’ve run out of ideas, riiiight!?

    ;-)

I don’t think the competition itself is going, is it ? : (

Fair play to Golden Discs for the sponsorship up to now.

Thanks to Golden Discs. I never got a win but like Janet, enjoyed seeing another side of people, discovering some new and being reminded of some old songs.

I’d like too thank Golden Discs for their support of this brilliant competition over the years, and their continued support for Irish music.
I always looked forward to Fridays so I could learn new music from artists I’d never heard of, videos I’d never seen and tracks that I still listen too now.

The weekly playlist that contributors made every week were brilliant, with such a diverse mixture from every genre of music.

Someone once said, it’s like been in the pub on a Friday night discussing music with your mates.

Hopefully it can continue in some form?

Massive Thanks to Sinead and Nick, and all of Nicks judges ( some weeks it can’t have been easy!).

Remember, support your local record store!

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. No competition? Denied?!?

Hopefully, it will be back somehow.

I echo the comments above. The end of an era. The Friday competition has been something I have looked forward to for a while. Let’s hope some other sponsor can step in. Please do, all the excellent contributors can only enhance your brand. :-)

Good riddance. You had to be in the Broadsheet clique to stand any chance of winning. Notable that Janet above refers to her “wins”.

I certainly whiled away many an hour over the last fifteen or sixteen months and expanded my musical horizons to boot , I have enjoyed myself immensely too.
It was never really about the voucher , I tasted victory a couple of times, I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed that too.
Thanks to Nick, and to all of us for weaving a tapestry with all the various threads.
Is it just that there would be no prize until a new sponsor or that there will be no more Thank——–it’s Friday.

eamonn, we were just told this morning, it’s a really sad loss as the vouchers were lovely prizes. Nick and I will have a chat later about how we go forward.

Maybe in the short term the winner can have the honour of choosing the next comp topic?…until a sponsor is found…

(or perhaps a small second hand record shop in a provincial town w/o broadband circa the 80’s based on the ahem ‘winners’ around here, maybe a topcosplay shop with mullet wigs:)

          suggest the most suitable sponsor!

    2. yupyup

      Well said Eamonn.

I often didn’t catch it on the Friday but always made sure to check out the entries early on the Monday and Tuesday – always a big help in easing my way back into the working week.

Found some great new tracks from this, Otis and Papi in particular if I had to single anyone out

the competition was one of the best things about friday, a real shame that it’s ended. thanks GD for the sponsorship – i would have thought it was great value promotion for a €25 voucher. i know since i won it twice i’ve spent at least a couple of hundred quid on vinyl in dundrum.
there really is only one thing for it. we need to organise a broadsheet disco according to current protocols; nick pics a theme, soq, micko and ematty larging it on the dancefloor while cian and nigel tut and take stats in the corner. the rest of us take turns djing until chucking out time.

      1. Nick Kelly

Thanks everyone for all your kind words. Really appreciate it. Anyone who won a voucher deserved it – there were no cliques. It was always a real pleasure.

Me too Nick. Sorry to be that guy. I won a voucher a month or two ago and was wondering but didn’t want to be rude :(

often I’m alone a Friday night, if I can get the baby down, it’s like a night out, I have a sneaky glass and turn the sounds up loud ( in my headphones ), often a trip down memory lane, or new paths, I’ll genuinely miss it too.

    1. millie bobby brownie

      That’s a great idea Giggs.

Will undoubtedly miss Golden Discs, but I truly hope it’s not the end of ‘sheet music. It’s would be criminal to retire one of the most popular and positive regular posts on here.

…actually thought i was in with a fairly decent chance this week, now its cancelled,no not canceled shadow suspended but not banned but the vouchers which never really now are canceled until new sponsors are….grand then..:)

    cheers John for…
