From top: Daft report for the second quarter of 2021; Cian O’Callaghan

This morning.

The latest report from Daft.ie shows that on average rents in Dublin increased in the second quarter of this year by around 0.5% with a national increase of 5.6%.

Cian O Callaghan – Social Democrat housing spokesman – whose party wishes to see a freeze on rent increases, said:

“Today’s report reveals the abject failure of this government to tackle the rental crisis. Rents climbed by an average annual rate of 5.6pc in the second quarter of this year, but the rates of increase were even higher in many areas.

For instance, rents in Kerry, Leitrim and Roscommon surged by more than 16pc while rents in Donegal, Cavan, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Waterford all increased by more than 14pc.

“The unprecedented nature of this crisis is evident in the fact that it is now cheaper to repay a mortgage than pay rent in nearly every region of the country. In fact, the only two places where a mortgage for a three-bed home is more expensive than rent is in Dublin 4 and Dublin 6.”

All the hoo-ha about Zappone and Merriongate (which to be fair was shambolically handled by FG for what was to all intents and purposes a fairly minor position) when housing is the real issue bound to seal the fate of the government and FF in particular. This issue is no doubt going to explode again and if no substantial changes are forthcoming in the years ahead in what is an outrageously dysfunctional market affecting an outrageously irate young and engaged electorate, then the government might very well lament a good old smokescreen like the Zappone affair.

it’s entirely possible for these fupps to have more than one hoo-ha going on at the same time y’know?
and possible for us to be angry and critique every ropey decision we experience (or just point and laugh/cry as often is the case in our kip)
the merri-zapp-gate anger is well justified
I really don’t think there’s any smokescreening going on
their arrogant asses (and the dysfunctional nature of this government construct) was found out again, simple as, and its part of the same problem actually as the one you’re poking at
also your timings are off “and if no substantial changes are forthcoming in the years ahead” – they were needed YESTERDAY

Those Dublin rents make my eyes water, Jeeeeayzus!

Irelands cost of living controls seem to have bolted long ago. Totally out of t***ing control. Who is responsible for managing this reasonably?

Who is responsible? FG, given they’ve been the dominant party in government for over a decade now. The buck stops there.

Or if you mean who can be trusted to manage it responsibly in the future? God knows, but certainly not FG anyway. Its worth giving anyone else a try at this stage.

Yeah I get you on Fine Gael. They’re a disaster for the middle & working class. I meant is there a cross department communication of the housing minister, finance minister & banking regulator? Shouldn’t they be held accountable for what they have done? Its a mess!

I’ll tell you this, I will never vote FG or FF again. The only thing I have seen wrought by either of those two parties in my lifetime is (a) an enormous financial crisis whereby I and my children, and all of my generation and their children, have been saddled with an enormous debt that we neither asked for or have any responsibility for and (b) an enormous housing crisis which has spiralled for years and years, making the cost of living for the average person unfeasible and miserable, which despite many warnings from the CSO, was ignored for years until we are left with an unsustainable situation and no houses.

Between them both they have damned my generation and the next to either emigration or scraping by here and begging for whatever half baked scheme they come out with next to save face. They’re a fcking disgrace.
