This afternoon.

Lixnaw, county Kerry.

Gardai block access on the approach road to Ballyreahan in Lixnaw and the scene of what they believe is a double homicide and suicide, following the discovery of three bodies last night.

A woman in her 60s was found in a house at Ballyreehan along with her son, aged 23, also in the house. Both had been shot. The body of the woman’s partner was found in a field, along with a shotgun.

It has become like a cliche to say that a community is in shock. Several shocking tragedies of this kind have happened in recent years, with communities in shock. Our nationwide society needs to be shocked, to sympathise with friends and relatives affected, and then do some deep thinking. Why are such shattering events happening? What demons are lurking below apparently calm households? Can they be identified so that such events might be reduced?

In analyzing trends in crime, the motive of each individual case isn’t as significant as trends that can be established in perpetrators. These familial murder suicides are almost exclusively (exclusively?) committed by men.

Inheritance issues (or other conflict issues) are never going to go away, mens’ violent reactions to those (or other) issues could if they were faced.

Interesting, the spread is less extreme than I had presumed (thanks for correction). It does underline a total difference in motivation which backs up what I said about mens’ violent reactions to conflict. All the women were let down by sub standard mental health care, whereas a large majority of the men were acting in anger related to immediate circumstances. Tragic.

A woman and her son were murdered, but because he killed himself, the murderer will be afforded the same sympathy as his victims.

There needs to be a full health recheck of all licenced gun owners, too many people are being murdered by legally held weapons.

The same murders could have taken place with a kitchen knife or a rock.

Between 2000 and 2020 there were 30 recorded murder-suicide incidents, an average of 1.5 per year. In the past 20 months there have been four. It’s possible that the perpetrators bore intense hatred for their family members or, due to deep-rooted family disputes, are committing these tragic acts as a ‘solution’. We don’t know the cause of this particular incident but you are right; we cannot simply label murderers as having ‘mental health problems’ and afford them sympathy. It’s a heinous act, and the evil is in the act not the cause, not the drink taken and not the anxiety and pressures they may have been under.
