The Trinity College Dublin professor said he contracted the virus from a close contact last week
This morning/afternoon.
Today with Claire Byrne on RTÉ Radio One.
Via Irish Mirror:
One of Ireland’s leading immunologists Professor Luke O’Neill has revealed that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
The expert said he was feeling “pretty good” and had a “slight cough and some sniffles” but nothing too severe.
“The vaccine is protecting me,” he said..
“I got my PCR test on Saturday, got the result yesterday, which was positive, and now I’m stuck in isolation for the next few days.”
“A close contact identified me, basically, having spent time with me at work,” he said.

The Trinity College professor said he has only very mild symptoms and that a self-administered test showed he had the virus within seconds of taking it.
“It just shows the power of antigen testing in a way as it came up [positive] very quick and I then stayed home and that’s what the testing is all about.
“I was amazed, as an immunologist, within two seconds it had moved up the window. The band appeared immediately, whether I was a strong positive or not, it came up very quickly,” Prof O’Neill said on Today with Claire Byrne.
Now – the HSE sent him the 3 tests. Their advice on the website is that the results appear in approx 15 minutes. Not 2 seconds.
O’Neill is a waffler, and loves the limelight. His raison d’etre, it’s becoming quite clear.
Wait at least 15 mins. I’ve used them and the line can appear much faster than that. Depends on how much buffer solution is dropped on the pad.
What is a problem is people not using the swab properly and thinking they are in the clear when they’re not. At least with the PCR test there is a better chance of consistency.
I’ve used them too. The line takes at least 3 minutes, and can take longer. The HSE’s own instructions are to allow approx 15 minutes.
2 seconds is a load of waffle.
luke just has better covid than us..
A kind of ‘Private’ Covid. On the lines of ‘private’ health insurance
Or maybe it’s just ‘Limelight Covid’
I wasn’t counting the seconds but was surprised when mine was fairly instant as well. I was expecting to have to wait, but bingo, there it was.
So you didn’t take the HSE info / instructions into account Lilly?
And your instant reading was?
Maybe you should try your luck with the Lotto this week, Lilly.
Why so snide just because my experience of the antigen test resembled Luke O’Neill’s. Must we all sing from the same hymn sheet here?
From the same bingo sheet, to be fair.
Just thought your luck was in and a stab at the lotto numbers wouldn’t be too far of a stretch – considering.
What a card.
It’s the hand you dealt me, Lilly.
Back from blocking up the roads?
Scan the code
“Scan the code”… what so Bill Gates can steal all my data and take over my life… nice try Bill…
It’s just information ce. Go on, scan it. You know you want to.
That’s big no then. Did anyone show up at your loser protests at all today?
Just as an aside – We used to refer to Brendan Bowyer as ‘Brendan Bowyer and The Big Ape’ when he was due to play locally. ‘Brendan Bowyer and the Big Eight of course’
Care to make a point about it? All sounds good to me.
“slight cough and some sniffles”
Wow amazing – its almost like the time I caught a cold and stayed at home for a day.
Most certainly not , that is a pretty warped view of people you have got going there @NotSpencerTunick
How is it warped?
What’s the difference in practical terms between a slight cough and sniffles with covid and slight cough and sniffles with a cold?
I wish Professor O’Neill all the best and a speedy return to a healthy sense of proportion.
“Wouldn’t it be funny if he died?”
You anti-vax ‘skeptic’s – that’s what you are all thinking, right?
no
Thats pretty bloody awful…says more about yourself that you’d even go there.
Most certainly not , that is a pretty warped view of people you have got going there @NotSpencerTunick
Sorry ; that comment should have been in reference to @ I can’t stand the rain
You couldn’t be further from the truth.
Horrible comment.
I can’t stand, I can’t stand the rain.
Why wound he die? Nasty comment. Even for someone who knows he’s a knob
“The vaccine is protecting me,” said the man testing positive for the thing he was vaccinated against.
It might be, we just don’t know, there was a huge spike in cases in April 2020 but deaths dropped back to normal after that, I’m assuming that’s because the vaccine program was in full swing by then.

Just to be clear I’m not saying it is….I don’t know.
”protecting him from a more serious illness, hospitalisation, death” but you knew all that of course, hopefully, by now.
I’m not sure what point you’re making, you’re just repeating what I said. We don’t know, it’s possible based on the stats that it did protect him?
Sorry, my comment was @’M’ who I feel was being deliberately obtuse.
Some of the drop in death rate could also be attributed to Delta, which we were told when it arrived was more transmissible but less dangerous. Coincided nicely with vaccine rollout and summer too so hard to tell. Omicron now again supposedly more transmissible and even less harmful again. Will it be? We’ll see. In any event, the reduction in deaths due to a less dangerous variant will almost certainly be fully credited to the vaccines. January and February should enable us to get a better idea of where we really stand.
“The vaccine is protecting me,” said the man testing positive for the thing he was vaccinated against. —–AND—-He’s already bloody had Covid. Dear God this is insane!!
+ 1
+ 2 next weeks are critical
And, he’s not even remotely fearful of this deadly virus or the possibility of long Covid – or have they given up on that tall tale?

You could hear a pin drop.
haha looks like an x
Next time you hear him on Pat Kenny’s radio show have a shot every time he says the phrase “you see”. You’ll be on your ear after five minutes.
Another Covid celeb milking his 15 minutes (or however long this lasts).
O’Neill is a bit of a schizophrenic.
