The Southern Fold – Save Your Soul

Something gothic this way comes.

Hailing from the Deep South East, The Southern Fold duo of Kilkenny-based Emlyn Holden (top right) and Dubliner Laura Hand (top left) serve up a brooding take on Americana that would fit right in on a True Detective soundtrack.

The highly atmospheric black-and-white video by Frieda Freytag adds an ethereal, mysterious layer on top.

The album Bible Fear is released on October 31.

Nick says: Spread the gospel.

John Blek – Empty Pockets

We may be an island of sensitive singer/songwriters but John Blek (top) is a cut above the rest as the Cork-based musician shows on his new single, the first from his album The Embers due next year.

A hugely empathetic tale of struggle in hard times is complemented by Doniirawan‘s heartbreaking video of a homeless busker’s trials and tribulations.

“This is my fortune; what is the cost?” Blek ponders stoically.

You can catch John live at The Cobblestone, Dublin, on October 18; Cleere’s, Kilkenny, October 19; and De Barras, Clonakilty, Cork, October 20.

Nick says: Any colour you like as long as it’s Blek.

Blackbird & Crow – Harlot On Holy Hill / The Witch That Could Not Be Burned

Must be the season of the witch.

If electric pagan blues is your thing, then you’re going to love the new video from Donegal duo Maighread Grace (top left) and Stephen Doohan (top right) aka Blackbird & Crow.

In her innately musical Donegal accent, Maighread delivers a declamatory spoken word tale of a free-spirited jezebel hunted by pitchfork-wielding yokels, while Stephen rips it up with a meaty slide guitar riff that would have the ghost of Rory Gallagher doing the duckwalk.

Nick says: Live at the witch trials.

So “Hurricane” Lorenzo has been and gone.

Then may we direct you to the Alternative Sunday Social Club in The Wild Duck on Sycamore Street, Dublin 2, where former Dixons alumnus Ed McGinley (whose excellent song ‘Bring’ can be accessed above) will be playing for your pleasure.

Ed will be previewing material from his forthcoming album, Tangled Roots & Twisted Tales. His band features Darragh O’Kelly (organ & piano) Garvan Gallagher (bass) and Kevin Malone (drums).

Special guest is Jerome Arrigan, making his Dublin debut, and as always doors are 4pm and tix are €10.

Nick says: Better Ed than dead.

Basciville – Unreturned

Now, that‘s what I call a voice.

Wexford noir-soul duo Basciville have just ‘dropped’ this new live video shot seamlessly in one take by Wolff at the County Wexford School of Music of them performing their new song Unreturned.

Having wowed the audience at the recent Jeff Buckley tribute gig in Whelan’s, Wexford Street, Dublin with his pin-drop powerful performance, singer Cillian Byrne (top left) nails it again here while sibling Lorcan (top right) does his percussion wizard thing.

Basciville play the Grand Social, Lower Liffey Street, Dublin 1, tomorrow at 10.30pm as part of the Irish Music Week showcases.

Nick says: Bask in Basciville.
